The American Sikh Forum, among other Sikh organizations, has actively advocated for the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor. We have launched petitions and engaged in other forms of activism to urge the Indian government to reopen the corridor, which facilitates visa-free travel for Indian pilgrims to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism's founder, Guru Nanak Dev.
While the Kartarpur Corridor was initially opened in 2019 and later reopened in November 2021 after a closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was again shut down in May 2025 following India's "Operation Sindoor". This recent closure has prompted renewed calls for its reopening, with the American Sikh Forum highlighting the corridor's significance as a symbol of peace, unity, and reconciliation.
However, the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor faces challenges, including security concerns for India and the need for goodwill and cooperation between India and Pakistan to address these issues. Despite these challenges, the American Sikh Forum continues to campaign for the corridor's reopening, emphasizing its importance for the Sikh community and its potential to promote understanding and harmony between the two nations.
