We’re Hir We’re Q***r (WHWQ) is a small collectively-run pamphlet and zine distro based in New York City and Rio de Janeiro. As gendered, racialized and sexualized oppressed people, our interests in politics and theory are often stifled by sexist academia, machismo teachers and chauvinistic comrades. Society discourages those of us who are not white, heterosexual, cis men from engaging critically

with theory, philosophy, and politics. WHWQ was born out of an attempt to disrupt that norm. Originally launched as a site to reflect on a community q***r theory study group, WHWQ worked with that group to cut through the alienation we experienced at the hands of the usual institutional spaces. Now, WHWQ is turning over a new leaf with renewed confidence and belief in the importance of encouraging non-males, q***rs, and transgender folks, especially those who are people of color, to write, read, and engage with political theory. We see this project as intimately connected to practical, on the ground struggle—we are committed to circulating the writings that have informed us as organizers and as militants. More specifically, the WHWQ distro focuses on revolutionary and radical political theory about q***rs, written by q***rs, and in the interest in the fight for the liberation of q***rs. Oftentimes this means our content does not directly mention anything about LGBTQ people. This is because we recognize that many q***rs want to read or write about gentrification, white supremacy, immigration, etc. All these fights are deeply and necessarily related to the fight for q***r liberation and are therefore deeply necessary for our work as a distro.

Art is a form of theory making.

"Here, however, we get the real deal: the books have been read, the posters have been hung, and they show signs of wear and tear, speaking to the initial motivations of the post-revolution Constructivists: get the Soviet word out. When shown in their original forms, en masse, these pamphlets, posters, magazines, and books are all overtly political. Colors are representative of the Russian Civil War and ‘red’ beats ‘white’; images of Lenin are based upon the strictures of Orthodox iconography. It becomes clear that these artists were themselves cogs in the Soviet propaganda machine, a role that may have been forgotten 100 years later, in a contemporary climate where rock bands co-opt political imagery for their own ends (something that, 15 years ago, Hal Foster referred to as ‘fetish*tic constructivism’)."

The Paper Revolution at the ADAM: Brussels Design Museum unite close to 100 original works on paper from a variety of artistic Soviet luminaries.

Some short notes on Dystopianist popular culture and the rise of Fascism by Eve Mitchell.

"Utopian and dystopian themed media as a broader trend pop up historically in moments of crisis: world wars, economic and political crises, mass uprisings and movements, etc. They express the day to day experience of socialism or barbarism. What makes today’s dystopian stories in the U.S. new and different is the way they illustrate the uniqueness of our time: the crisis of social reproduction, and the political vacuum in danger of being filled by anti-woman, anti-immigrant, white supremacist fascism."

At the start of the first world war, razor-sharp Marxist organizer Rosa Luxemburg described the world around her as existing within a turning point: it would be

What we are listening to for Pride month. Super important stuff.

"What has been the relationship between q***r struggles and other struggles on the left against racism, imperialism, and war? It’s often assumed that gay and le***an liberation has run on its own separate track, but historian Emily Hobson argues that’s a misconception. She reflects on the history of LGBTQ liberation and the politics of solidarity, including with people resisting U.S. intervention in Central America."
