Enjoy a game of "Freeze Dance" with one of the songs from your collection. Invite children to dance as the music plays. You can press the pause button at any time, and once the music stops, the children get to freeze in dancing positions! Up-tempo songs present different challenges than smooth and slow songs, so use a variety of songs whenever you play!
Tip: "Freezing" also builds inhibitory control, one of a set of important skills known as executive functions that develop rapidly throughout early childhood. (Learn more about how music supports executive function by visiting https://www.musictogether.com/executive-function

Creating Harmony: How Music Can Support Social Emotional Development Posted April 23, 2019
From the Music Together Blog Making music with your child can be so much fun for both of you, whether you’re singing along to the radio in the car, jamming on plastic bowl “drums,” or dancing to songs on your iPod. Plus, music-making helps your child’s development in many important ways. The best part? You don’t have to have a great singing voice or play a musical instrument to have an impact. The simple and enjoyable act of making music with your child naturally fosters important social and emotional skills, such as self-regulation, self-confidence, leadership skills, social skills, and socio-emotional intelligence.
Singing and dancing together led to increased empathy (the ability to understand and even share in the feelings of others) for the children with whom they were making music. Even in infancy,[ii]adult-child music and movement interactions can lead to better communication and increased emotional and social coordination and connection, both rhythmically and emotionally, between the adult and the child. Researchers propose this might support infants’ earliest abilities to engage in positive social interactions with others.

From the Music Together Blog posted July 26, 2017
Making Music Together: Building Connections in Mind, Body, and Soul
At one point or another, we have all experienced the connection and bonding that can arise when making music or dancing with another person or in a group.
Maybe it was singing in a choir or singing as a family in the car. Maybe it was dancing the “Electric Slide” at a wedding, chanting a sports anthem in a stadium, or making music in your Music Together class.
..research suggests that these benefits extend to young children as well. Preschoolers who engaged in joint music and movement activities showed greater group cohesion, cooperation, and prosocial behavior when compared to children who did not engage in the same music activities. The increased empathy and commitment (feeling of “we”) observed in the children in the music-making group was theorized to emerge from the shared intentions and collective goal of singing and dancing together. Even in infancy, adult-child music and movement interactions can lead to increased coordination and connection, both rhythmically and emotionally, between adult and child. Researchers now propose this might support infants’ earliest abilities to engage in positive social interactions with others.

From Music Together Music LLC - Together® Supports Early Brain Development 2012
Infant neurological development is stimulated through ‘purposeful touch’ and is optimally effective when accompanied by face-to-face, responsive interactions. For an infant, tactile and kinesthetic stimulation of their millions of sensory cells can help to release important chemicals in the brain and decrease heart rate, blood pressure, and the stress hormone cortisol, which can be particularly damaging in infancy. Appropriately stimulating touch can also enhance muscular coordination and tone; promote regulation of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems; and strengthen the bond between a caregiver and infant. On a practical level, this touch stimulation can calm an infant and help him sleep betteriii. The adult-infant interactions in a Music Together class are grounded in the understanding of the developmental benefits of ‘purposeful touch’ for the infant. Parents and caregivers can learn about the positive benefits of tactile and kinesthetic stimulation in early infancy through musically and rhythmically engaging interactions, where purposeful touch helps to stimulate their infant’s neurological development.
From the Music Together Blog Music + Your Baby: Talking or Singing? Dated March 31, 2021
Parents are sometimes surprised to hear that they can start Music Together® classes with their babies as soon after birth as they’d like. That’s because all children are born music-makers. Yes, your baby’s cries, coos, and squeals are also their first attempts at singing! How do babies go from “aahh!” to “do, re, mi”? Like all early learning, it starts with parent and caregiver support.
Think about how children learn language. Babies are not born with the ability to speak their language; rather, they are born with the potential to learn to speak their language. It’s only through prolonged exposure to language and practice making sounds (babbling) that children acquire language competency. The same is true for music-learning. We’re all born with the potential to learn music—and with lots of exposure to music and chances to practice musical sounds, we can each learn to sing in tune and move with accurate rhythm.
The good news? You can support your child’s music development the same way you do their language development: through reinforcement and play. When a baby first says “da-da,” we typically react with lots of positive feedback and echo back “da-da!” This instinctive response reinforces the baby’s first attempts at speaking, which leads to more babbling with their grownups, and eventually, language fluency. When you reinforce their early singing, too, your baby will also become fluent in music-making!
