DOE restrictions have forced MELS as a school to cancel prom. However Class of 2021 has decided to move forward and plan their own event as 'prom'. Since this is no longer a MELS sponsored event, the senior dues are not permitted to be used to fund it. We ask our MELS alumni to share out the go fund me link and help reduce the additional costs and make this affordable for all students in the class of 2021!

In Memory of LENNY DISTEFANO - As we shared during last night town hall meeting, another one of our alums has unfortunately passed at a very young age. Lenny Distefano (class of 2017) passed away on Sunday, August 23. Lenny was a quiet kid with a great sense of humor. He loved wrestling and formed tight bonds with his teammates, which helped him throughout high school. Information regarding services can be found at this link: https://www.papaverotributelink.com/obituary/leonard-distefano. We have sent floral arrangements on behalf of the school and will be attending the visitation either tonight or tomorrow. Reach out to us if you need anything.

Congrats Kennedy on your continued success!
We are happy to announce that Ms. Kennedy T. Davis-Nealy will be joining our Speech camp staff as an instructor. Kennedy is a sophomore at Queens College, majoring in a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a current GPA of 3.94. She also has membership in the Youth NAACP and Queen College’s Black Student Union. In the spring of 2020, she became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority Incorporated., which focuses on scholarship, sisterhood, and service.
In 2016, she joined Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School’s speech and debate team during her freshman year of high school. She competed in the category of OI, Oral Interpretation, in the New York State Forensic League (NYSFL), where she performed prose and poetry pieces for all four years of her speech journey. In the Fall of 2018, she placed 6th in New York State for Oral Interpretation. That same year, she also placed 5th at the Yale Invitational Tournament. During her final year of speech in 2019, Kennedy placed 3rd in her category at Hofstra University’s annual state competition, while also graduating as the Salutatorian of her class.
During the four years of being on the speech team, not only did she compete, she also coached and supported members of the team by providing feedback and encouragement to her peers. In her senior year, she was known as the “speech mom” for all of the love and support she gave to the entire team. Kennedy is excited to guide the next generation of public speakers to success!

We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to support the family during this time of need.
