Why does the risk of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases increase with age?
Researchers led by Ana Maria Cuervo, M.D., Ph.D., and the late Fernando Macian-Juan, M.D., Ph.D., at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have uncovered a critical mechanism behind age-related immune decline. Their study found that the gradual loss of a cellular recycling process called chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) weakens regulatory T cells, which help keep excessive immune responses in check.
Published in Nature Communications, the findings suggest that restoring CMA activity could open new avenues for treating age-related inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

“How can we make things work better?” That question has guided Michelle Ng Gong, M.D., M.S., throughout her career. She came to the U.S. from Hong Kong at age 7, not speaking a word of English, and attended the Bronx High School of Science, within walking distance of Montefiore.
Today, Dr. Gong serves as chair of the Department of Medicine at Montefiore Einstein and is internationally recognized for her leadership in critical care medicine.
Through data science, artificial intelligence, and team-based research, she is helping improve patient outcomes while shaping the future of healthcare delivery.

From the Bronx to Biotech - and back to Einstein. 🎓
Scott Braunstein, M.D. ‘90, started as a science kid in the Bronx, volunteering with his local ambulance corps. In 2000, 10 years after earning his medical degree from Einstein, he made a bold pivot from clinical medicine to healthcare consulting, and eventually biotech leadership.
Today, Dr. Braunstein helps bring promising discoveries closer to patients while mentoring the next generation of physician-innovators at Einstein.
