Our is Maya Guthrie of CPC UK 2022! Maya is now working as an Editorial Assistant for Little, Brown. She gives a little insight into the course's workshop weeks and highlights the importance of staying power in the publishing industry among other things below.
Q: What was your favorite part of the course?
Meeting everyone! I really value the friendships that I made while in Oxford. Not a day goes by without me connecting with someone from our cohort. And I frequently cross paths with other CPC alumni in the workplace. Whether at a mixer, over email, or even just in the hallways at the office, it's a privilege to almost always have CPC as common ground with remarkable people in the industry.
Q: What was the most valuable thing you learned at the course?
The variety within publishing. Getting to hear from experts across all divisions gave us a holistic perspective of the industry. That background knowledge was essential during the job hunt and my early days at Little, Brown.
Q: Any advice for course graduates on the job hunt?
Don't give up! So much of this industry is just about staying power. My mantra throughout the job hunt was "All it takes is one yes."

Our is Christopher Labaza of CPC NY 2023! Christopher is now working as a Production Assistant for Putnam Books at Penguin Random House. He gives a little insight into the course's workshop weeks and highlights the importance of those thank you notes and letting your personality come through while interviewing for jobs .
Q: What was your favorite part of the course?
The best thing about the course was being surrounded by book lovers for six weeks. I loved meeting people whose bookshelves were their pride and joy, who always had at least half a dozen recommendations on hand, who rattled off the names of publishing companies like they were designer brands. Everyone brought their passion for literature to the many lectures and the long days and late nights of the workshops. Working with these people—both peers and seasoned professionals—was such a blast!
Q: What was the most valuable thing you learned at the course?
Send those Thank You notes! During the course, when applying, and even at the wonderful job you got because you sent the hiring manager a thank you note, send a Thank You note. By the end of the course, this practice became second nature to me, and I'm really grateful that I had the chance to develop the habit. It might seem tedious or overly formal, but I know from experience that a thoughtful, genuine note of appreciation actually matters. And when you're one of a thousand applicants for a job, every little thing counts.
Q: Any advice for course graduates on the job hunt?
The best piece of interviewing advice I received was to focus on building rapport rather than proving yourself as someone who's "fit for the role." If you've been invited to interview, the hiring manager already likes your resume. Another way to think about it is like this: they are looking to hire a person, not a piece of paper, so make sure your personality shines through as much as you highlight the achievements on your resume. This shift in mindset helped me relax in interviews and ultimately make the personal connection that was needed to land a job.

Happy ! We love to support indie bookstores this day and every day, but we wanted to highlight two shops that are nearby favorites for our students, Book Culture here in New York and Blackwell's in Oxford.
