Join us to Celebrate Boston’s Recognition as the Birthplace of American Journalism
Friday, September 25, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
Boston City Hall, Eagle Room
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Department of Journalism at Emerson College invite you to celebrate Boston being named the first city in America to win the Society’s National Historic Site in Journalism Award.
SPJ national and regional officers will present Boston Mayor Marty Walsh with the award.
Emerson College President Dr. Lee Pelton and the Journalism Department faculty and students will represent the College, including Journalism Professor and historian Dr. Manny Paraschos who submitted the winning nomination to SPJ.
The award, a 16x26 inch brass plaque, enumerates the reasons Boston is recognized as the birthplace of American journalism. This is the first time the award has gone to a city, rather than a single location or person—highlighting the totality of Boston’s role in journalism history.
The plaque will be presented at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015, in the Eagle Room of Boston’s City Hall – the same date that marks the 325th anniversary of the publication of the first newspaper in America.
A reception will follow at a location to be decided. Please RSVP by Friday, September 18 to [email protected]
