Bringing smiles to all corners of the world!

For over 20 years, NYU College of Dentistry has provided its students, residents, and faculty with opportunities to participate in extensive oral health outreach programs in a variety of national and global locations. These inter-disciplinary programs provide participants with a unique service-learning experience, increase awareness of access-to-care issues and challenge participants to re-think their roles as health care providers.

The NYU Dentistry Global Outreach team recently conducted a site visit at The Center For Discovery, near Monticello, New York. The Center for Discovery® (non-profit organization), designated as a Center of Excellence by the New York State Department of Health and OPWDD, is a major research and specialty center that offers residential, medical, clinical and special education programs as well as world-class Music and Creative Arts Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, and a biodynamic agricultural program among other unique services.

We were so impressed and humbled by the work they do and hope to be able to set up a program together soon!

The NYU Dentistry Global Outreach team is back on their first international trip since January 2020! Dr. Anabella Oquendo, Dr. Alexis Cohen, Eddie Rosenbaum, and Kristin Memoli are on a site visit in the Dominican Republic for a potential pediatric prevention program! They are conducting dental screenings in local schools to asses the caries prevalence and meeting with local partners to gain an understanding of the oral health situation in the communities.
The team is very excited to get the programs up a running in the near future!

Dear Global Outreach alumni, students, faculty, local partners, donors, patients, friends and followers:

It is with heavy hearts that we share some unfortunate news. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, the Office of Global Outreach will be on hiatus through at least January 2021.

We hope to reconvene in 2021 to pick up where we left off, and wish you health and safety in the meantime. Until we interact again, please wear a mask, wash your hands, and don't forget to brush and floss!

Could there be a link between oral hygiene and the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections? 08/04/2020

Oral health, although commonly overlooked, is an essential component of overall health. In this article, investigators propose an association between oral health (primarily through bacterial load of the oral cavity) and SARS-CoV-2 severity.

COVID-19 research is just beginning - what other factors should researchers investigate? What do you think of their initial findings?
