Many times, when I start working on standardized test prep with a student, they voice their objection to being reduced to a number.
Who are “they” to sort people on the basis of a single performance? Why is this such a crucial benchmark for an individual’s worth? Burdened by the injustice of it, my students struggle to make time for the work that seems dehumanizing.
I think it’s important to remember that each and every one of us must try--in whatever way that we can--to connect with one another. These tests provide a mechanism for connection.
Students can develop insight into how they encounter challenges. What do you do when you cannot solve a problem? How do you react when you find yourself confounded by your own thoughts? What do you do when--in the midst of reading a passage--that all too familiar voice beckons: “I don’t know if I can do this.”
The beauty of these tests is that they illuminate how we navigate conflict. As we examine ourselves under the pressure of these tests, we can deepen our understanding of how we navigate interpersonal conflict or the anxiety of searching for the right career. For this reason, they have a far more significant and powerful role in a student’s life than college admissions. They are a tool through which one can deepen one’s awareness of oneself, and ultimately become a better person.
