"Each has his past shut in him like the leaves of a book known to him by his heart, and his friends can only read the title." - Virginia Woolf

Joni Mitchell - River 12/06/2020

“It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river I could skate away on...

Happy Wednesday🐼

Of course nothing stops the cold,
black curved blade-
from hooking forward,
Of course
loss is the great lesson.
But also I say this: that light
is an invitation
to happiness,
and that happiness,
when done right,
is a kind of holiness,
palpable and redemptive.

Happy Wednesday🐼

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
Mary Oliver, Wild Geese

There’s something about walking up 5th Avenue on a crispy fall day. Walking past masks and pigeons on lions. The dusty streets, noise and smog dance with the hard hats drilling the land. Walking north from the West Village, I pass different faces of life. Some in shades looking down at every step while others looking forward and up bright, lighted with hope. I give a coffee to the woman displaced on the corner and a biscuit to her dog as children scoot by past me fast without helmets. The setting is Kobra’s kaleidoscope of colors. The walk is long, but time is unnoticed when you pay attention to the life all around- the college girl sitting alone on a bench lost in a book, two young men flirting over lattes and scones, the smell of the sweet roasted nuts to the exhaust that chokes. The sites, sounds and smells of a New York City walk changes like a slide show each street you pass. Then finally after all the the stops and goes; reds and greens, I finally reach the serenity of Central Park and I sit and breathe. Each step on this journey has led me here to enjoy this peaceful reward.
