Credit Milton Esterow, Artists Rights Society (ARS), The New York Times for highlighting art listed 24/7 by fraudulent sellers since most online venues don't bother to vet online art listings. To demonstrate their commitment to buyer safety, the leading venues should become proactive, hire experienced art professionals with requisite knowledge who have the authority to eliminate deceptive listings that clutter online art venues.

A good rule of thumb when buying fine art online; a Certificate of Authenticity, aka COA, is WORTHLESS unless issued by the respective artist/estate. To be valid, a certificate of authenticity must be authored by an acknowledged authority/expert, the artist who created the art or agent acting in an
arms length capacity.

A COA is invalid when issued by a self serving dealer/seller who has a financial interest in the respective sold art, ultimately providing zero protection and immediate disqualification.

Spurred by advances in photomechanical reproduction, forgers are increasingly selling unauthorized copies of famous works on the internet, and elsewhere.
