BRETT WINGATE’S calling has always been that of an agent provocateur, to provoke, to shock, to surprise. He finds the party of beauty we haven’t seen on the surface. In these photographs, he takes on the beauties of nature, and turns them inside out, to show us the things we haven’t seen, the things that have gone unnoticed, even while they were right before our eyes. The erotic impulse is always with us; Brett shows its remarkable presence in the most ordinary of objects. Shock. Sensuality. Surprise. It’s all there.

The Gates of Protection (Ho Ji Mun) and the Four Guardian Sky Spirits (Sa Chun Wang) In order to enter the temple greater, one must pass through four gates: the gate of circumnavigation, the gate of deliverance, the gate of moral strength, and the gate of the Four Guardian Spirits of the sky, before first entering the Grand Hall. Bo Mun Sa is bound to the gate of protection and the gate of the four Guardian Spirits of the sky, and so assumes the form of a tall structure. Thus, in order to enter the gate of the four Guardian Spirits, one must climb to the 2nd floor. The white writings inscribed in the red columns here sparkle with an unusual light, and also has the image of the burning Magic Pearl, which is entwined by the green dragon and the yellow dragon.
