In this session, we will explore detoxing practices with a focus on the diaphragm and 3rd chakra. This region of the body is hugely connected to immunity, willpower, mental health, and is especially important during the transition from winter to spring. We will begin with a short meditation and sankalpa (intention setting), some gentle movement, break down the practices and body mechanics, dive into 2 specific exercises, and then wind down with some yoga nidra. I hope you can join us!

Here’s a quick 3 minute breath practice to help conquer the sneaky ego and build Self-love. Soul love. Ever feel not good enough, self- destructive and self-loathing? Have you identified with parts of yourself that you “hate” and feel you can’t change? We are pure spirit soul, eternal, full of knowledge, and joyful! and identifying with that part of us starts our healing.

This breath practice helps the mind to find equilibrium and connect to that inner essence which is divinely creative, a child of God, loved and supported by source.

Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh (chin in, neck long). Maintain an alert attitude.
MUDRA: Relax the arms at the sides and raise the forearms up and in toward the chest at the heart level. Draw the hands into fists. and point the thumbs straight up toward the sky. Press the fists together in such a manner that the thumbs and fists are touching. The palms are toward each other. This meditation requires the upper torso to be held straight, without rocking back and forth.
EYE POSITION: Fix the eyes at the tip of the nose. [I accidentally said the tips of the thumbs which is from a similar practice, so ignore that and look at the tip of your nose 😌]
There is no required mantra other than the subtle sound of the breath.
BREATH: Inhale through the nose.
Exhale completely through the mouth.
Inhale deeply and smoothly through the mouth. Exhale through the nose.
TIME: Continue for 3 minutes. Gradually build the time to I I minutes. Practice daily, but do not exceed 22 minutes in any one session.
TO END: Inhale and stretch the arms up over the head. Keep the stretched position as you take 3 more deep breaths. Relax.

Did you know that a typical adult engages as little as 10% of the range of the diaphragm when breathing?? The diaphragm is a crucial muscle in freeing up our breathing and increasing energy supplies to essential organs. The diaphragm also often holds a lot of physical tension and emotional trauma, locking us in unconscious, limiting patterns of thought and movement. When we open up this crucial muscle and expand its range, it eases stress on the heart and allows for greater circulation and more efficient bodily functions. It also gives us greater access to better exhales: which are often more important to our wellbeing than inhales! So many amazing teachings from the breath and James Nestor’s book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art.

This breath meditation is really helpful in getting us out of discouragement and emotional, depressive funks. As you hold the breath out, the energy, or prana, begins to assimilate and restructure your internal energetic resources, building great strength into the nervous system and a new stability and trust in yourself.
💫
How to:

- Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh (neck lock)

- Extend both arms straight forward, and parallel to the ground. Curl the fingers of the right hand into a
fist. Extend the thumb straight up. Keep the elbow straight and move the fist to the center of the body. Move
the left arm to the center and wrap the fingers of the left hand around the outside of the right hand’s fist. Extend
the left thumb straight up. Adjust the grip of the hands so that the thumbs can touch along their sides as they point up. The tips of the thumbs will form a little "V" like a gunsight.

- Focus the eyes on the thumbnails and through the “V." Look through the V like a gunsight, seeing far away
and seeing the V.

- Inhale deeply and fill the lungs for 5 seconds.

- Exhale completely and empty the lungs for 5 seconds.

- Then suspend the breath out as you stay still for 15 seconds.

- Continue this breath cycle for 3-5 minutes. Slowly build up to 11 minutes. Do not exceed 11 minutes.

- As you master the practice, you can increase the time that you hold the breath out from 15 seconds up to 60
seconds. Pick a time that is realistic for you. Then build the practice time up to 11 minutes.

Share with someone who could benefit and practice it yourself. With consistency, observe the deeply transformative powers of your breath and commitment!

We’ll be going into this and more during the 50 hour Pranayama training. Starting September 5!

What is wholeness? It is said that through the ages, the battle between good and evil moved from planet against planet, to country against country, brother against brother, and now, it rages within each and every heart. As we unveil the internalized toxicity we’ve been unwittingly sold under various guises of subliminal and overt programming — from material status, to educational indoctrination, media brainwashing, we can see that the core issues which dupe us as individuals again and again are those humanity has been fighting with for time immemorial — unbridled lust, anger, greed, emotional attachment, arrogance, and envy. It’s human to experience these enemies of the mind, and it is heroic to wage a personal war against them inside your own being, in all the little subversive ways those enemies still live within us. In my experience, wholeness comes when I stop lying to myself about my faults and embrace the challenge to course correct, make amends, admit where I’ve chosen to stay in an unhealthy comfort zone.

The more we each do our part to keep up that fight, the greater chance of catching that elusive quality of peace, equality, and harmony among all living creatures. May we be anointed with the courage to show up and be honest to the core our our souls, show up and do the real work — inside and out...
