I don’t think every pregnant person needs a birth plan.
I think every pregnant person needs birth education.
There’s a big difference.
Birth plans often become lists of things you hope won’t happen. But labor is unpredictable, and sometimes the safest recommendation isn’t what you originally envisioned.
For example, instead of simply writing “No Pitocin,” wouldn’t it be more empowering to understand:
• Why Pitocin is recommended
• When it may actually be beneficial
• When you might choose to ask more questions or consider other options
When you understand your options, you don’t lose control if your birth takes a different path. You gain the confidence to make informed decisions that still honor your preferences.
