In today's martial arts community, there are many different systems of ranking. Some are more grounded in previous traditions. Others are controversial and subject to debate. I have trained in and hold rank in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese martial arts systems, with somewhat different approaches. However, this is how I decided to address rank in the Lion's Roar Martial Arts Association

Some will say that "belts" and "ranking" were not part of traditional Chinese martial arts training. This is true, but we are teaching in the 21st C and in a very different cultural context. Ranking not only helps the organization of our teaching, it helps motivate the student.

At the same time, there is no question that rank has been subject to abuse and corruption. I once heard that one small US town had more 10th Dan black belts than all of Asia!

To properly use a ranking system, the Lion's Roar Martial Arts Association uses the following methods.

The colored belts (Ji 級) and the first black belt total eight, in the same way the Bagua (八卦) progresses, but also in a circular manner.

The degrees of black belt (Duan 段) are five (5) and only five. This mimicks the "five elements" (五行). This encourages growth and development in the individual. Of course, the higher Duan are also political in nature. But I strongly want to avoid the controversial swamp of so called 7th, 8th, 9th and even 10th Duan black belts. Simply put, there is no need for it.
