Produced when the Newsreel collective was established more than 40 years ago, needless to say, they are in urgent need of preservation.
Third World Newsreel and the Newsreel Preservation Committee (members of the original Newsreel), have been working together to raise funds to restore and preserve the early Newsreel films. Third World Newsreel (TWN) has started the TWN FILM PRESERVATION FUND, specifically earmarked to restore and preserve many of the unparalleled NEWSREEL documentaries filmed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To
Formed originally in 1967 as NEWSREEL, the organization produced numerous documentaries and alternative “newsreels” that focused on the anti-Vietnam war movement and the various civil rights and liberation movements. These works included examinations of Women’s rights, Black power, the Latin, Native and Asian American experiences and many Third World national liberation movements. On average, preservation of one 30 minute documentary film can cost $ 10,287, or about $343 per minute. We have at least 20 titles in need of preservation, representing an overall need of more than $100,000. Third World Newsreel and the Newsreel Preservation Committee (consisting of members of the original Newsreel), have been working together to raise funds to restore and preserve these early Newsreel films. Currently, we are trying to preserve the historic 1970 16mm film "JANIE'S JANIE". "JANIE'S JANIE" is an important but rarely seen documentary shot in Newark by Geri Ashur, Marilyn Mulford, Stephanie Palewski and others. It follows a woman who comes to see the need to organize against a system that oppresses her at every turn - because she is poor, divorced and a woman. An early feminist film, this project is deeply personal and complex. One of the first objectives of the Preservation Fund is to preserve and resuscitate this historic film. So far, we have been able to raise over half of the amount needed to preserve one film, "JANIE'S JANIE", and need your help in raising the remaining $3,116. This film and other high caliber historic documentaries are at risk of being lost for ever! It is critical that we preserve the early TWN films for future generations of students, scholars, activists and audiences. Won’t you please participate in preserving the Newsreel collection and help continue the tradition of social issue and activist media! Send your gift today payable to Third World Newsreel with “Preservation” noted in the memo section, or make an online donation at www.twn.org. Third World Newsreel
