In my 22-year journey as an educator, I've dedicated my career to working with marginalized communities. Growing up as a Latina daughter of immigrants and low income, I showed an early inkling for math. My mom was my biggest supporter, giving me the opportunity to go to boarding school and college, where I learned about my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills gaps!

Everyone is a mathematician! It’s our job to meet people where they are to help them grow and break this invisible math ceiling. The new math teaches critical thinking, but we often revert to old methods.

My mission is to break it by supporting BIPOC families and guiding instructional leaders to implement better practices in schools.

I don't know about you, but on Sundays my heart flutters and my mind races. I love seeing kiddos on Monday, but the idea of a new week can bring up a lot of feelings. This week is especially stressful for the educators and learners I work with in NY and CT as they go into a state testing week. It's even more critical to remember to care for yourself before you care for others. Using breathing techniques is one way to self care and here are some techniques:

1. Deep breathing: Inhale through the nose, filling the lungs with air, and exhale through the mouth, emptying the lungs.

2. Diaphragmatic breathing: Also known as belly breathing, this technique involves breathing deeply into the lower part of the lungs, while expanding the abdomen.

3. Box breathing: This technique involves inhaling for a count of 4, holding your breath for a count of 4, exhaling for a count of 4, and holding for a count of 4.

4. Equal breathing: Inhale through the nose for a count of 4, and exhale through the nose for a count of 4.

5. Alternate nostril breathing: Use the fingers to alternate closing off one nostril at a time while inhaling and exhaling through each nostril.

6. Progressive muscle relaxation: This technique involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups while taking deep breaths.

Preparing for a test can be a stressful experience, but as an educator, it's essential to stay calm and present so that you can guide your learners effectively.

You must put your mask on first before you can put the mask on others, besides the strategies above, here are some additional strategies:

Plan Ahead: One of the most effective ways to stay calm during test prep is to plan ahead. Create a detailed lesson plan, including the materials and resources that you'll need. This will help you feel more organized and confident as you approach the test day.

Focus on What You Can Control: It's easy to get caught up in the stress of test prep, but it's important to focus on what you can control. Instead of worrying about things that are beyond your control, focus on creating a positive and supportive environment for your students.

Take Breaks: It's essential to take breaks during test prep to prevent burnout. Take short breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk around, or do something you enjoy. This will help you stay refreshed and focused.

Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness is an effective way to reduce stress and stay calm. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises.

Maintain a Positive Attitude: Finally, maintain a positive attitude throughout the test prep process. Encourage your students to do their best, and remind them that their efforts are important and valuable. By staying positive, you can help your students feel more confident and prepared for the test.
