Writing the Heartbeat – Personal Narratives for Teens of Color
An online writing workshop camp for grades 9-12
July 27 – July 31
Connie Pertuz-Meza an amazing teacher, writer and storyteller, is the instructor. Here’s Connie description of the camp:
“Are you a teenager of color ages 14 thru 18 who wants your voice out in the world? Do you have a story to tell, one buried in your heart, ready to be uncovered, but yearn for the safety and love of community in which to tell it? This one-week camp is for teen writers of color who want their voices and stories to be heard. We will write our personal narratives in a way that ensures your heartbeat will be felt on the page, through personal essay, flash creative nonfiction, short memoir, and poetry. Or we can write autobiographical fiction, and borrow from our lives to create characters, and build setting and plot lines. We will study craft to inspire, inform, and investigate the art of writing. Students will have the chance to sign up for a one-on- one videoconference with the instructor to get individualized writing attention.”

Comic books can speak to everyone, from age 8 to 80! Check out our three comic camps for 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds starting soon!
Civil rights movement superhero John Lewis, who died last week at age 80, thought comic books were important. That’s why the late congressman wrote a graphic novel memoir trilogy called “March” that tells the story of his life in the movement.
And that’s why Lewis went to Comic Con and cosplayed as his younger self -- complete with a trench coat and a backpack containing two books, an apple, and orange, a toothbrush and toothpaste -- so as to recreate what he’d worn and carried onto Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965.
At Comic Con, Lewis led a group of children, who knew him because they'd read “March,” on a march around the convention center, passing the power of activism on to a new generation.
This summer, Online Camps International has three comic camps taught by incredible teachers! They're a great introduction for third, fourth and fifth graders to a genre beloved by John Lewis!

Middle Schoolers who are fans of the writer Gary Soto will love Online Camps International's combined reading and writing camp with Vicki Vinton, "Become a Better Writer by Doing an Author Study!" It starts next week on Zoom!
In weeklong camp, which meets each day for 75 minutes, here's what you'll do:
Here’s two writers’ secrets you may not know: Writers repeat themselves, telling the same stories again and again, each time in a new disguise, and they’re also thieves who borrow, steal and imitate other writers.
This 5-day combined reading and writing course, will encourage campers to both repeat themselves and steal by studying a single author in depth to see how they return to the most important stories and themes in their lives and how they use craft to bring those stories alive.
Campers will:
Read and discuss a handful of one author’s stories and poems with their fellow campers
Consider what’s similar across the stories and poems
Think about the stories and themes that have shaped their own lives
Notice, name and steal some of the craft of the author under study
Draft a story and/or poem about one of the significant stories or themes in their life
Share and celebrate a part of their story or poem during the last day of camp
Before this camp begins, campers should get Gary Soto’s Facts of Life and Living Up the Street. Both books can be downloaded on Amazon Kindle.
