Happy World Intellectual Property Day!
Today, April 26th, we celebrate the power of ideas and the creators, writers, researchers, and innovators who bring them to life.
Intellectual property matters because it protects the value of human creativity. When we respect IP through proper citation, ethical research, and honoring original work, we uphold the dignity of every person who has poured their time, talent, and voice into creating something meaningful. Understanding intellectual property is part of being a responsible and empowered communicator, because our words, stories, and innovations have real value.
This World IP Day, take a moment to recognize the creative work around you and commit to engaging with it thoughtfully.

The Power of Revision: Revision is where good writing becomes great writing. When students take a second look at their work, they can make small, targeted changes. Adjusting verbs, sentence openings, and transitions can make a paragraph clearer, more engaging, and easier to follow.
Strong, specific verbs instantly add energy and precision. It makes a meaningful difference to turn “went” into “hurried,” “looked” into “examined,” or “said” into “insisted.” Varying sentence openings helps the writing flow, and well-chosen transitions (“however,” “as a result,” “meanwhile,” “in contrast”) guide the reader smoothly from one idea to the next. When students revise with these small tweaks in mind, their writing transforms.

World Book and Copyright Day (April 23) is a wonderful reminder of how powerful stories and ideas can be, and why it matters to protect the people who create them. Books help our students grow in empathy, imagination, and critical thinking, and copyright laws ensure that authors, illustrators, and publishers are honored for their hard work and creativity.
At Rose Writing Center, we encourage students not only to read widely but also to respect intellectual property by using sources ethically, citing correctly, and valuing original thought in their own writing. Today is a great day to curl up with a good book, talk with your child about where stories come from, and celebrate the voices that make our shelves and minds so rich.

As the end of the semester approaches, and playoffs, championships, and recitals ramp up, it’s normal for students to feel torn between schoolwork and high-stakes activities. This is a great time to sit down together, map out all upcoming tests, projects, and games, and break big tasks into smaller, daily steps so nothing piles up the night before. A simple weekly calendar or checklist can help students see that there is enough time when they plan ahead intentionally.
Equally important is protecting rest: encourage your student to schedule short breaks, choose one or two priorities each day, and set a consistent “shutdown” time in the evening to wind down without screens. Remind them that nervousness before a big game or exam is normal, and teach a few quick strategies, like deep breathing, positive self-talk, or a short walk, to reset their focus. When students learn to plan their time and manage their stress, they build skills that serve them both in the classroom and on the field or court.

April is National Letter Writing Month, a perfect time to remember that good old-fashioned letters still matter, even in a world of texts and email. Learning how to write a clear, thoughtful letter helps students practice audience awareness, organization, tone, and proper formatting. These are skills that carry over into emails to teachers, scholarship requests, cover letters, and other real-life communication. Knowing how to open a letter, state a purpose politely, and close it well is still an essential part of being a skilled communicator.
Letter writing is also making a quiet resurgence. Many people are rediscovering the joy of handwritten notes, thank-you letters, and meaningful messages that can be saved and reread. For students, writing letters can make writing feel more personal and purposeful, whether they are thanking a coach, encouraging a friend, or corresponding with a grandparent.
