I am a nurse practitioner board certified in family health who also has a doctorate in nursing practice.
Nurse practitioner
What is a nurse practitioner? A nurse practitioner is an advanced practice nurse. Advanced practice nurse (APN) has earned at minimum a masters degree in nursing. Can be MSN, MN, MA or Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
A nurse practitioner is trained in assessments, diagnosis and prescribe treatments for many common medical conditions. The nurse practitioner is trained in certain specialties such as family practice, adult, pediatric, acute care and psychiatric mental health.
Many states require national board certification for recognition and practice.
In many states there needs to be a collaboration with a physician. If you practice in a full authority state then there is no legal requirement per that states regulatory board for a physician collaboration .
You must first be a licensed registered professional nurse to become a nurse practitioner. Once you have graduated from a bachelors degree program and passed the NCLEX-RN exam, you may apply to a nurse practitioner program.
Accreditation counts. The board of nursing or your states certifying board always checks and reviews that you have graduated from an accredited program. Your program needs to be accredited for you to be eligible to sit for the NCLEX exam, apply for another state registered nurse license, apply to graduate nursing programs and/or apply for another state nurse practitioner certificate.
Nurse practitioners practice and can be found in a variety of settings such as hospital, clinic, school, nursing home and home care.

College selection 🗒time
“ Parenting is hard. Just like lots of important jobs are hard. Why is it that the second a mother admits that it’s hard, people feel the need to suggest that maybe she’s not doing it right? Or that she certainly shouldn’t add more to her list. Maybe the fact that it’s so hard means she IS doing it right, in her own way, and she happens to be honest.” - Glennon Doyle
Imagine spring 1992 a young black girl in Brooklyn, New York dreams of attending Howard University, applies and gets accepted. What I did not know was my mom had the real power & real money. So at 17 years old my mom knew the type of student I was and removed all options of me going away for college. So I cried for weeks when she told me “ Your not going anywhere. Your going to college right here!”
My son, Nathaniel, has a different story and path…
Together Nathaniel & I , as his mom, decided on colleges. Through conversations, on campus college site visits and numerous spreadsheets, we strategized and narrowed 2 pages of college choices to one final decision.
🔑 to proper college selection
✍🏾 Get comfortable writing things down either in paper or a spreadsheet. Numbers real when seen with your👁
🎯Laser focus. The focus for your child & you is on getting an education 🧠but not paying with arm and🦵🏾
❌Eliminate distractions. Colleges will write the scholarships as one large lump sum.
❌Eliminate time wasters. If you know 100% you cannot afford that school without scholarship and grants, tell your child
❌Eliminate procrastination. If your 17 or 18 years old child cannot study 📚, hand in homework 📚 on time and balance ⚖️ their academic and social life independently.

February is Black History month
Mary Eliza Mahoney
(1845- 1926) was the first African American to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States.
Born in Boston Massachusetts in Spring 1845 to free slaves, she worked her way up at New England Hospital for Women and Children from janitor, cook, washer woman and nurses aide to applying to their nursing program. She started in a class of 42 students and only 4 graduated in 1879; she was among the 4 students who graduated from the rigorous graduate nursing program at the New England Hospital For Women and Children.
Due to discrimination at the time she opted to work as private duty nurse.
She was a member of the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada ( NASUDC, later known as the American Nurses Association) in 1896.
Later, in 1908 she co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses ( NACGN) after facing discrimination from NASUDC. This association aimed to support and congratulate the accomplishments of all outstanding nurses and to eliminate racial discrimination in the nursing community.
She was an advocate for women’s rights.
An award had been established in her name initially with NACGN, then when it merged with the American Nurses Association in 1951, the award continued. Today, it’s called the Mary Mahoney Award, which recognizes contributions, by an individual or a group of nurses , to integration within the nursing profession.

7 steps for your College acceptances , take your time.
This is the time of year where acceptance letters will start rolling in from colleges/university if you did not receive one for early admission.
Your ( or child’s) education is important but also remember college is a business. They are in the education business. You are the consumer. I want you to be a wise consumer and student.
📝I started a spreadsheet to keep track of school acceptance, tuition cost, fees, room & board, meal plans, scholarships offered, direct out-of-pocket expenses. The best way to see numbers is to ✍🏾 it down.
When a school offers you a scholarship or multiple scholarships here are some things to pay attention to
1️⃣- start a spreadsheet of all the college acceptances
2️⃣ - see is it a full 100% tuition or partial tuition scholarship or grant
3️⃣- are you commuting daily or living on campus
4️⃣- if living on campus, how much is the room and board aka dorm where you will sleep cost you
5️⃣- if living on campus, how much is the meal plan. You have to eat.
6️⃣- if you are going to commute daily; how much will the public transportation cost, if your driving - how much will gas ⛽️ cost
7️⃣- if you are commuting daily then daily food allowance, you have to eat to fuel your brain so you can study properly
You need to do this for each college or university that offers you acceptance to their program.

February is Black History month
I wanted to start of the month by highlighting one of the first black millionaires.
Madam C.J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919) was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records.
She was a widower at a young age with one child.
She is known for selling hair care products to African-American women like herself and was owner of two real estate properties.
