There are so many things that I love about this activity! First, it is super easy to create. You will need a sorting mat, number cards, and a collection of natural materials. The sorting mat can easily be a piece of cardboard, a placemat, or a piece of large construction paper. Use index cards, puzzle pieces, or post-its to create the numbers on top of the mat. My absolute favorite part of this activity is the collection of the materials. This is the perfect time of year to go on a nature walk with your child. Bring a ziplock bag or other carrier and have them collect sticks, rocks, leaves, acorns, pinecones, etc... Help them collect enough materials for each number on the mat. When you get back from the nature walk, help your child sort and count their collection onto the mat.
As an added bonus you can turn your nature walk into a scavenger hunt. Comment below for a printable nature walk scavenger hunt pdf.

Such a simple and fun way to teach or reinforce letter recognition and/or phonemic awareness skills. Have your child collect rocks or purchase them at your local craft store. Write uppercase or lowercase letters, you could even make the rocks double-sided. Print out the letter mat and have your child match the rocks. If you want to challenge them, you can ask them to match the rocks based on the sound of the letter. For example, say "what letter makes a Bbbb sound?". Help your child find and match the letter Bb rock to the mat.
