Topic: Do you know the wine of Terre de la Custodia?
Terre de la Custodia is part of the Farchioni group, a name Italians usually associate with extra‑virgin olive oil rather than the grape varieties of the Montefalco region.
For centuries the Farchioni family has farmed Umbria, becoming one of the country’s leading olive oil producers. They have thousands of hectares under olives and cereals and bottles on supermarket shelves across Italy.
Producing wine, Daniele explained, came later, as a natural extension of the family’s instinct to “harvest the fruits of our hills and turn them into something precious.”

Do you know the Sagrantino Grape?
The setting for the Sagrantino Tasting in Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco is the medieval town that.
It was built in the late 13th century when Montefalco was a self‑governing commune.
It was later extended with a Renaissance loggia and bell tower as the town came under papal rule and developed into today’s compact hilltop center.
The piazza outside, Piazza del Comune, is the historic hub where all streets converge, surrounded by churches and noble palaces.
From here, vineyards fall away on all sides, forming the DOCG zone that supplies the wines in my glass.

Do you know the wines of Valdangius?
Valdangius is a small family winery in Montefalco that grew out of a traditional mixed farm.
For generations, the family raised farm animals and made simple wine. Most of it sold in bulk to a local cooperative.
The turning point came when the current owner, Daniele, decided that this model would not be the future of the property.

Do you know the wines of Scacciadiavoli in Montefalco?
Scacciadiavoli is one of the oldest and most recognizable wineries in the Montefalco area.
Its story is straightforward once you strip away the legend and practice the winery name a few times.
The name “Scacciadiavoli” means “drive out the devils.” It comes from an older local story about an exorcist who used wine as part of his work. Today the name functions mainly as a distinctive brand identity and a reminder of the winery’s long roots in the region.
The winery founder was Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi, Prince of Piombino.
He conceived the estate in 1884 as a large, technically advanced winery for its time.
He wanted to create a modern wine operation in the hills around Montefalco and chose a multi‑level structure that would allow gravity to do much of the work, from grape reception at the top down through fermentation and aging levels below.

Do you know the wines of Goretti?
Cantina Goretti is based just outside Perugia. Yet for this tasting during the three-day A Montefalco experience the two active daughters of the estate came to Montefalco.
The tasting was conducted in a small enoteca on an ancient Montefalco street. It contained one front room lined with bottles, a refrigerated counter of cheeses and cured meats, and lots of wine bottles.
A dozen journalists stood shoulder to shoulder with glasses while the Goretti sisters presented their wines.
The choice of venue underlined the practical reality of central Umbria. Perugia and Montefalco belong to the same wine story, but they are far enough apart that bringing the wines to town saves time for people with tight schedules.

🍷Topic: Exploring Cantine di Nessuno
🍷If you ever fantasized about what an old-fashioned Sicilian winery looks like, I saw it firsthand on my visit to Cantine di Nessuno. Its owner is Seby Costanzo, a handsome Clint Eastwood lookalike, with charm and energy to spare.
The exterior of this relic is all stone and rough-hewn wood, existing more for ambiance than utility. Mr. Costanzo had purchased this old vineyard and others like it to save some of Mount Etna’s historic vines.
From this historic wine house, we followed Mr. Costanzo up a very steep hill, more typically seen in the Northern Rhone. Though I was wearing flat shoes, the steep hill and six-inch-wide path made it quite difficult to scale. I wondered how the workers would fare during harvest, since the rocky steep path was more accessible for goats than humans.
After the vineyard walk, we visited Mr. Costanza’s sleek modern tasting room a five-minute car ride away.

🍷During the visit, the air was crisp. The sweeping views of blue skies and soaring birds set the perfect scene for our tour. It was an amazing transformation, considering that just five minutes earlier at the Nicosia showroom on the flatlands, the air was grey and wet with rain.
As we walked through the vineyards, I could see that the grapes were ripening for the mid-September harvest. I couldn’t resist tasting a few of the grapes straight from the vine. They tasted sweet and juicy. I was mindful that soon, they would be transformed into some of the finest wines this region offers.
During the tour, I discovered that Monte Gorna had been farmed for over a few centuries for its prized grapes. After the devastation of phylloxera and then the world wars, the vineyards had been forgotten. But starting a quarter century ago, these vineyards and others around Sicily are now experiencing a vibrant resurgence.

Topic: Do You Know the Graci Winery Mount Etna>
✔️One of the highlights of my visit to Mount Etna to explore new wineries and meet passionate winemakers was my time at Graci Winery. It is owned by the dynamic Alberto Aiello Graci.
Alberto, with his effortlessly stylish Milanese flair and aristocratic looks, was incredibly down-to-earth. Despite his fashionable exterior, his deep connection to the land and his “peasant’s passion” for winemaking is clear. The first part of the visit was the tour of the nearly 200-year-old winery. It was inspiring to see someone so rooted in both tradition and innovation, bringing new life to a winery steeped in Sicilian history.
✔️The Graci winery is located in Passopisciaro, on the north slope of Mount Etna.Campore Winery on Mount Etna This is an area where viticulture has thrived for thousands of years. The winery sits at an impressive altitude of 600 to 1,000 meters, where the conditions are ideal for growing native Sicilian grapes.
