I feel ya!
But guess what? Now is the perfect time to unpack those backpacks and decide what stays and what goes from the school year. It takes just a few minutes and will make you feel lighter and more organized and will teach the kids some basic management and maintenance.
Here are my top tips:
✏️Do it with the kids (yes I know it’s easier not to)
✏️Designate a box for each child
✏️Limit the amount of things you keep to 5-10 items, a sampling
✏️Take a picture of things you’re not keeping but want to remember
✏️Toss unusable school supplies and store the rest
✏️Donate or trash the backpack if you’ll be getting a new one

During those early days of separation and divorce emotions are running high and there can be lots of blaming.
The messaging from society is often that moms are more capable and competent parents. Dads either buy into this message or try to fight it, oftentimes without much success. The truth is that dads can be just as resourceful as moms. The truth is that kids need input and parenting from both parents.
Chances are that during a marriage, one parent did more of the household and child management than the other. Now that there are 2 households, the less involved parent just needs some help to get set up and up to speed.
If you have a dad in your life going through divorce and want to help but don’t know exactly how, a gift certificate for some organizational help is a great option!

I'm pretty fortunate to have not 1 but 2 fantastic professional networks. As a professional organizer working with divorcing + divorced families, I have one foot in the divorce world and one in the organizing world.
I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of these professionals one on one, sharing experiences, information and brainstorming about how we can best help our clients. I am grateful for this opportunity to both give and receive support in my professional life.
I'd love to hear about your networking experiences!

Ok, I'm coming clean here (no pun intended). I'm totally obsessed and fangirling over The Home Edit's Netflix series. Maybe it's the fun dynamic between Clea and Joanna or the way they create a color-coded trail mix bar in a previously chaotic pantry. I'm not sure exactly - but I love everything! If you haven't watched it yet, I strongly suggest checking it out! It's wholesome family tv that inspires even the littlest members of the family to get organized.

After divorce there will be lots of changes and updates to the business of life. Where do you start? This can feel very overwhelming. You may feel anxious about forgetting something, or concerned you're not on top of the updates.
This article by Heather Ayer is a great place to start. It outlines 8 important areas to address, covering kids, social media and your financial life.
In addition to updating your children's school with new addresses, it's a good idea to let them know that you are divorcing. Understandably, many people may not feel comfortable sharing this, but our children spend so much time in school, it is essential for their teachers to be informed of any significant changes in the home, and divorce is definitely in that category!

Look around your physical space. Does it reflect the vibe you want in your life? If so great! If not, try to identify one small change you can make to shift the feeling. Maybe it’s cleaning off countertops, or getting rid of that painting you’ve really never liked.

What's the difference between need and want? Sounds pretty basic, right? But I bet you use need and want interchangeably without much thought!
Moving on physically and mentally after divorce gives us the opportunity to truly consider what we bring into this new stage of life.
Ask yourself - “is this thing, person, situation… life giving or life taking?”
With "things" you want to make sure you are choosing to bring things into your home that you need, love and don't already have too many of. Having too many things to organize, maintain or clean will take time away from the "life-giving" ways you want to spend your time.
With people, we want to make sure that we are only allowing people who are nourish us in our lives. Same as the stuff - if it takes too much effort and energy to maintain a relationship or situation, then it becomes "life-taking", robbing you time for yourself and the positive relationships that nurture you.
Stay mindful and choose wisely!!
