“Smells like camp.”

That was my usual refrain when I moved from the city to the suburbs many years ago–the fresh scent of God's green earth conjuring up visions of summers spent among the rolling hills, shimmering lakes, and idyllic pastures of Dover Plains, NY. Yes, Camp Sharparoon sealed my love of the great outdoors, if not for Mother Nature herself.

So, when the assistant principal at Brooklyn’s Evergreen Middle School for Urban Exploration reached out to say they needed financial help for their three-day camping trip, well, how could I resist?

Busloads of students this spring ventured to Nature’s Classroom in Charlton, MA, the excursion reflecting experiential learning at its best, with a number of playful activities mixed in as well.

According to AP Jean-Bruce, scholars "examined biomes, investigated the interdependent relationships among species, and gained a deeper understanding of humanity's connection to the natural world and the importance of environmental preservation."

I guess The Force was with them.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we've already raised 25% of our $1,000 end-of-August goal for our Fabulous Fall campaign! 🙌

A donation isn't just a donation.

~ It's a student stepping onto an HBCU campus and imagining themselves there.
~ It's experiencing Lincoln Center and discovering a new appreciation for the arts.
~ It's walking in the footsteps of Civil Rights heroes and connecting history to the world around them.
~ It's a young person stepping beyond the boundaries of their neighborhood and seeing possibilities they may never have imagined.

That's what your support can make possible.

Let's get from 25% to 100%—together.

Please help us make this a Fabulous Fall for our students. Donate by August 31 and Givebutter will match 5% of your gift:

As a new school year begins, thousands of students will return to classrooms filled with possibility. But for the students The Trip Foundation serves, some of the most powerful lessons won't come from a textbook—they'll come from stepping beyond the familiar and experiencing the world firsthand.

This fall, students from public schools across the New York City metropolitan area will embark on transformative educational journeys that broaden perspectives, ignite curiosity, and inspire bigger dreams. They'll visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities, experience world-class performing arts at Lincoln Center, walk in the footsteps of Civil Rights heroes, and discover places that make history, culture, science, and the arts come alive.

For many students, these experiences simply wouldn't happen without financial assistance.

Our goal is to raise $1,000 BY THE END OF AUGUST to help remove the financial barriers that prevent students from participating in these life-changing educational experiences. Every gift helps ensure that cost never stands in the way of a student's opportunity to explore, discover, and imagine a brighter future.

There's another reason to give today. In celebration of Black Philanthropy Month, eligible donations made through Givebutter during August will receive a 5% MATCH for participating Black-led organizations. That means your generosity can go even further in helping students experience a whole new world: https://givebutter.com/fabulous-fall-y3rgh5

Thank you for investing in the limitless potential of our young people. Together, we're opening doors, broadening horizons, and creating opportunities that will last a lifetime.

So, what kind of club did you belong to when you were in high school?

Student government? Drama? Arts & Crafts?

How about... none?

Not to cast aspersion, but these days, some after-school programs are charting new territory--literally. Take the students at Frederick Douglass Academy VII, featured in the summer edition of Horizons. Members of its Brownsville Abroad club (even the name is cool!) ventured to Sao Paulo, Brazil this spring.

The scholars--as program founder Bijoun Jordan likes to refer to them--engaged in a variety of cultural activities and participated in a sustainable agriculture project on an organic family farm.

Just arriving in the country was enough to work up an appetite:

Two donors walk into a bar.

"Hey, did you know August is Black Philanthropy Month?"
"Really? What's it about?"
"It's when we recognize and support the 300,000 African-American led nonprofits in the U.S. They make up about 15% of the industry."
"Cool...know of any?"
"Yeah...Check out The Trip Foundation. They fund amazing international trips for public school kids in the New York metro area, taking them to places WE ain't even been to."
"Speak for yourself!"
"Places like Brazil, Japan, Costa Rica, South Africa and South Korea."
"That's all right! You give?"
"Yeah, man. Every month."
"Nice. How can I?"
"Just Google The Trip Foundation. Or, you can do it by picking up the tab tonight."
"Me?!"
"Only kidding... Just download this app called "Givebacks". When you eat out or hang out, the restaurant or bar makes a donation AT NO COST TO YOU."
"I like that."
"I call it giving without giving."
"Who are you, Bruce Lee?"
