A Road Map of Research and Post-Grad Journey.
April 14th at 4:30 PM in EDI 225
Abstract:
When I first started my graduate studies working on carbon nanotube speakers, I never imagined I'd eventually be developing target recognition algorithms and safety frameworks for reinforcement learning agents. Research careers rarely follow the plan you have in mind during grad school. In this talk, I'll walk through my journey from thermoacoustics into active noise control, underwater acoustics on the Great Lakes, and eventually into machine learning and Al. Through this, I've been a grad student, a research engineer, a project manager, and a PhD candidate. I'll share what I've learned about being a soft-funded researcher, how your technical skills can help you pivot to adjacent fields, and how this winding career path can be a feature and not a bug.

Join us and CAV for a presentation by Erin Winick Anthony.
Sharing Your Science Story
March 18th at 12:30 PM in ECoRE 504
Erin Winick Anthony is the founder of STEAM Power Media, a science communication company focused on digital storytelling. Her clients include everyone from lunar rover company Astrolab to women in STEM focused TV show Mission Unstoppable to parabolic flight company Zero-G. She holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Florida, and uses her technical background to serve as a translator between scientists and the public. Erin even sailed on a 2 month ocean expedition aboard the JOIDES Resolution as an onboard outreach officer, and as a science communication fellow about E/V Nautilus.

If you are at ASA Honolulu, come see at talk by Matthew Olmstead tomorrow at 10am.
Speaker: Matthew Olmstead
Title: Improving Photoacoustic Imaging through the Skull using Deep Learning: Effect of Shear Waves
Possible caption: Although the porous skull severely impacts the quality of brain images taken via photoacoustic computed tomography, the deep learning model U-Net can be used for effective image post-processing. This talk explores U-Net’s robustness by training the model on images with longitudinal wave effects, then later testing it on images with longitudinal+shear wave effects.
