Our Jr. Math and Science tutor is headed to LSU!
NAACP ACT-SO New Orleans congratulates our 17 year old Gold Medalist in Instrumental Music Contemporary, Camara Dupree Jr. ! He is a recent graduate from Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy and the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts where he studied Jazz. He plays the double bass in both classical and jazz idioms and loves to share his passion for music. He also plays the bass guitar. His passion for music began when he was 3 years old. He would watch the Little Einsteins cartoon and learn about music instruments and classical music. Itโs been his pursuit ever since. Camara began playing the drums and later transitioned to string instruments. He finally settled on the double bass because of itโs amazing sound and it looked difficult to master. He is the principal bassist in the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra (GNOYO) and plays in the New Orleans Volunteer Orchestra where he is the youngest member. Camara was selected and played in the Louisiana All-State Youth Orchestra as the principal bassist in 2022 and 2023. His mentors along this journey are my father, who is his biggest supporter, his bass instructor Paul Macres, who plays in the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and Dr. Jean Montes, Music Director of GNOYO. He has attended numerous music camps like the GNOYO Summer Music Festival and the Satchmo Summer Jazz Camp. He also attended the prestigious Sewanee Summer Music Festival last summer and will be attending it again this summer. He was selected to participate in the 2023 NEA/Herbie Hancock Institute National All-Star Peer-to-Peer Jazz Quintet, one of the most educative and prestigious programs in jazz education, where he will be on a weeklong performance tour with internationally renowned jazz recording artist Sean Jones providing jazz master classes in Virginia public schools.
Awards:
1st place in the GNOYO 2022 Concerto Competition
Gold medalist in the 2022 NAACP ACT-SO Awards Competition in the Instrumental Music Classical category
NOCCA DNA Award for exceptional artistic growth, perseverance, and accomplishments.
In July, Camara will compete in the national NAACP ACT-SO Competition in Boston MA.
In the fall, Camara will be attending LSU on a full scholarship and will major in Music Performance and Computer Science. He has received a total of $429,608 in scholarships from 6 schools. Camara is the son of Camara Dupree Sr. And Kemba Dupree.
