To raise awareness about Spina Bifida & show a kid being a kid. This is a page dedicated to our lil' baby Adam John Luke. He also happens to have Spina Bifida.

This page will have updates and photos regarding his condition etc. This also aided in providing information on how others could assist us in the costs incurred during his fetal surgery, bed rest and delivery. ys will have Spina Bifida. He will do great things with his life and we ALL will be here to watch him do it!! Adam John Luke is a feisty, strong willed, determined two year old little boy with beautiful brown eyes and blonde hair. Adam's form of Spina Bifida is called myelomeningocele in which the spinal cord and nerves develop outside of the body and are contained in a fluid-filled sac that is visible outside of the back area. To provide Adam with the best odds in his favor, we flew up to Philadelphia and underwent fetal surgery at Children's Hopsital of Philadelphia at the 26th week of his gestatation to close his spinal cord opening. He was later delivered via C-section at 37 weeks gestation on October 18, 2011. Adam's hind brain herniation reversed because of the fetal surgery closure and he has not required a shunt to be placed into his brain to reduce hydrocephalus. Although Adam does show stress incontinence with his bowel and bladder, he has been fortunate to not require catheterization to empty his bladder. Adam has weakness/paralysis from his ankles down and his left hip dislocates but he doesn't let it stop him. He wears Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFOs) and a month ago began using Twister Cables to help keep his feet straight when walking. He walks with a posterior walker in sprints and is growing stronger daily. We have hopes that he will be independently walking with his walker soon. His orthopedic foresees him being able to walk with arm crutches by preK or sooner. Adam has defied odds, proven medical professionals wrong and surpassed many expectations & I am truly blessed to have received this gift from God.

Another day… another annual appointment! We saw neurosurgeon, SB PT, social worker and dietitian. First time we ever participated in the SB clinic. We chose to decline other specialists since those are covered by docs at other hospitals. Thankfully all good reports and some tips to help strengthen up his core & hip flexors. He’s seen this neurosurgeon since he was 2 years old so she was in awe that he’s headed to high school too. Blessings upon blessings that this young man has not required any neurosurgery since in utero. Amen!

On Monday Adam had his last postop orthopedic appointment from his hip surgery last August. Thankfully his hip is still in place & everything looks stable. Adam now weighs 103 lbs and nearly 5 foot 1 inches tall when he’s stretched out. His right knee is contracted some which is hindering his ability to straighten that leg all the way. This is making standing still harder and causing his knee to buckle inward- doc ordered a knee immobilizer to help stretch that out. Doc referred him to another orthopedic who would be best to follow him from now on, sadly he is moving out of state shortly after he performs Sophie’s last spine surgery in June. We are blessed that he’s moving away after our kids no longer need his expertise. On our way home after the appointment, of course we stopped for chocolate frozen yogurt with a lot of various types of M&M toppings.

Yesterday the 8th graders at Adam’s school went to the Stennis Space Center for their end of year field trip. Mom didn’t attend but she has her ways of getting a photo or two of he and his friends. LOL I can’t believe they’ll all be in high school next year!
