We love talking about all the services we offer here at - study spaces, interlibrary loan, tech you can check out, archives, research help, etc., etc., etc. But, how many people take advantage of what we have to offer? We're going to answer exactly that question over the next few weeks by looking at Earl K. Long Library by the numbers. And we'll start with an easy one: 224,712, which is the number of library visits we recorded in 2025.

Summer semester has begun and it is prime time for some (and watching, and listening) recommendations from us here at . First up is a listening recommendation from Jaime (ILL & Stacks): RAM by Paul McCartney. Jaime says, "Before Paul McCartney unleashed the devastation known as Wings upon the world, he recorded RAM with his wife Linda (😭). Panned by critics on its release, it is in retrospect a perfect album for some summer listening... and far superior to that Wings claptrap (come fight me)." You can find it in the library's vinyl collection (ask for it at the Services Desk!).

So we've been doing some history deep dives as of late, so I thought I'd include some bona fide historical library artefacts for y'all. First up we have an advertisement for a product which sadly did not gain traction: a desktop microfiche reader. Who wouldn't want to read old documents in bed? The second pic is a library classic - the electric typewriter (secret confession time: I learnt to type on one of these bad boys). And last but not least: the stylus. Before we had sticky labels for putting call numbers on books, librarians used this heated "electro pencil" to write call numbers on book by hand.

I know that we're meant to be doing some history deep dives this summer, but I couldn't help but take a detour for this awesome picture of the UC from the archives, which features the roller coaster the Zephyr which was located at the amusement park Pontchartrain Beach. 🎢

This summer we thought it'd be fun to do some history deep dives, and there's no better place to begin than... the beginning. When Louisiana State University in New Orleans first opened to freshmen in September 1958, classrooms, the cafeteria, student center, administration offices, and the library were housed in abandoned U.S. Naval Air Station barracks. So there you have it, the very first library on campus.
