14 year old basketball player saved by quick action of school nurse and coach. Is your school prepared to save the life of a student athlete or student at your school. Training in CPR and the use of and of an AED( Automated External Defibrillator) and having an emergency plan in place saves lives.

NORTHVALE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A school nurse and basketball coach are being hailed as heroes after reviving a boy who collapsed and stopped breathing while playing basketball at a school in New Jersey. If this happened where your child plays, would the first 60 seconds look the same?

Thankfully two people in the stands recognized it and jumped in to help, but what if they didn't? What if one of them weren't a nurse who is trained and educated in this field?

In fact, the 14-year-old seemed unaware of what happened when he regained consciousness and spoke to the nurse before heading to the hospital.

"It was priceless. His words were, 'can we finish the game now?'" nurse Bohan said. "I don't think he realized whatever happened at the moment. Yeah, it's a beautiful ending."

Thanks to a well-trained staff, it certainly was a beautiful ending.

This is only one of many genetic heart conditions that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest, in our children. That is why you need to know your family's heart history and why our children's hearts should be screened before participating in sports. Florida just mandated this year that children have to have EKG's before they can play sports.
