URGENT CALL TO ACTION 01/26/2023

Support Midwifery in Mississippi!

URGENT CALL TO ACTION!

A pair of bills introduced in the Mississippi House and Senate would put practicing midwives at risk of being penalized up to $25,000 by the State Board of Medical Licensure in addition to existing civil and criminal penalties for the unlawful practice of medicine. We are joining forces with Mississippi Midwives Alliance in a united front to prevent these bills from passing in their current form.

We are asking you to call, text, and email the legislative authors of HB1219 and SB2816 to request that they revise these bills so that midwifery remains legal in Mississippi until licensure is in place.

Authors:
Senator Brice Wiggins [email protected] 601-359-3237
Representative Angela Cockerham [email protected] 601-359-1541

Below is a script to guide your communications with these legislators.

Dear [representative or senator],

SB 2816/HB 1219 will make Community Midwives ILLEGAL in Mississippi by removing the exemption clause in the current law that acknowledges midwifery is not the practice of medicine.

The Mississippi Midwives Alliance and Better Birth Mississippi are requesting that you amend SB 2816/HB 1219 so that the practice of medicine in Mississippi continues to include an exemption clause for midwifery. Mississippi families need continued lawful access to the community midwives currently practicing until midwifery licensure is in place.

Please ensure that any revision to the Medical Practice Act through SB 2816/HB 1219 continues to provide “that nothing in this section shall apply to females engaged solely in the practice of midwifery.”

Thank you for considering the needs of Mississippi families seeking midwifery care.

That was quick. Thanks to your support, Senator Wiggins stated he would re-exempt midwives in SB2816. I haven’t seen any language yet and this is a short fuse.

Please reach out to Representative Cockerham to get her to change her language to re-exempt midwives. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Good news!!! Members of the alliance met with Senator Wiggins and he is going to ensure our verbiage is back in for the senate bill That’s one win for today! Yay but, we have to get the same for the with Representative Angela Cockerham. Please call your senator and make sure they are in support of Senator Wiggins amendment to to keep the verbiage that keeps midwives practicing in our state.
