COP30 reinforced that effective climate action hinges on resilient systems, transparent governance, and stronger global cooperation. From scaling adaptation finance to safeguarding vulnerable communities, goals set in Belém highlight how urgently nations must act.
But progress doesn’t happen on policy alone. It needs people. Evidence-based decision-making, and accountable leadership are central to turning these goals into actual climate resilience on the ground.

This year, the Northeastern United States has faced record-breaking rain and repeated flash floods, disrupting communities, damaging homes, and threatening drinking water quality. Beyond property loss, flooding increases risks of mold exposure, waterborne illness, and mental health strain long after the waters recede.
As climate change fuels heavier storms, protecting health means preparing our infrastructure and our public health systems for a wetter future.
We can’t stop the rain, but we can change what it means. Act local. Work for climate. Live lighter — while there’s still time.

Climate change is leading to stronger, more intense and destructive hurricanes that can have immediate, ongoing, and cumulative effects on mental health. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health offers materials to help health care providers use ICD-10 Z codes to report social determinants of health. These codes can be applied to mental health impacts from hurricanes and other climate-related events and can help provide more holistic care and address health disparities by documenting the impact these factors have on health.
Click through to learn more about how hurricanes impact mental health, and how you can ask your healthcare provider to apply ICD-10 codes to push for better care addressing climate-related impacts on health.
For more details on Z codes, check out the infographic on our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/yccch
