🧲 Rare Earth Permanent Magnets — India's strategic challenge

This is one of the most important GS-III topics to study.

The discussion focuses on India's rare-earth strategy and a key gap in the domestic value chain: India has resources and upstream capabilities, but industrial-scale midstream processing and magnet manufacturing remain a challenge.

What are REPMs?

Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs) are extremely powerful magnets used in:

Electric vehicles

Wind turbines

Electronics

Aerospace

Defence

Industrial motors

The Government approved a ₹7,280 crore scheme in November 2025 to establish 6,000 MTPA of integrated REPM manufacturing capacity.

The important point is the value chain:

Rare-earth ore → oxide → metal → alloy → permanent magnet

India's challenge is particularly in the middle/downstream stages. A July 2026 government assessment said India currently imports its sintered NdFeB REPM requirement for downstream applications.
