This summer, Kapli Thapli completed a Chemistry Internship with Tusaar Corporation, gaining hands-on experience in resource recovery, environmental chemistry, and industrial research and development.

As part of the internship, Kapli investigated methods for recovering and purifying valuable rare-earth elements from complex mineral waste streams. Through laboratory research and experimentation, Kapli explored how chemical conditions influence the separation and processing of elements, contributing to efforts that support more sustainable resource utilization and waste reduction.

Kapli's work included acid digestion, sulfation, pH-specific precipitation, filtration, chromatography preparation, and data analysis. Additionally, Kapli assisted with nickel and chromium waste treatment projects, utilizing techniques such as oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) measurements, chromium detection, controlled pH adjustments, and filtration to better understand industrial waste management processes.

This experience provided valuable insight into separation chemistry, environmental stewardship, troubleshooting, and the application of classroom chemistry to real-world industrial challenges. Through this internship, Kapli strengthened both laboratory and analytical skills while contributing to innovative solutions for resource recovery and environmental sustainability.

Congratulations, Kapli, on an outstanding summer of research and professional growth!

🎉 Congratulations to Katharine Clayton, Muskingum University's Biology Student of the Year! 🎉

Katharine is a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She is conducting deer microbiome research with Dr. Santas, gaining valuable laboratory experience by extracting DNA from f***l samples to compare the microbiomes of healthy deer with those experiencing digestive issues.

Beyond Muskingum, Katharine has worked in the research department at the Cincinnati Zoo studying cat reproduction and has gained hands-on experience caring for a variety of animals through her work with the zoo and veterinary clinics across the Midwest.

A dedicated student-athlete, Katharine is a member of the Muskingum Volleyball Team and has served as a leader on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the past three years.

After completing her veterinary school applications this year, Katharine plans to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian and hopes to begin veterinary school in Fall 2027.

Please join us in celebrating Katharine's outstanding academic achievements, leadership, research experience, and commitment to animal health and science!

🌱 Summer Internship Spotlight: Braylon Buchanan 🌱

This summer, Braylon Buchanan completed an internship with the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District (MSWCD), where he investigated water quality across Muskingum County.

Braylon's research focused on measuring nitrate and phosphate concentrations in water collected from tile drains and other local water sources. These nutrients play an important role in agriculture, but excessive amounts can contribute to environmental concerns such as harmful algal blooms, reduced dissolved oxygen levels, and impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

In addition to analyzing nitrate and phosphate levels, Braylon examined turbidity, conductivity, and pH to assess overall water quality and identify potential environmental stressors. By comparing this year's findings with data collected in previous years, he also helped identify long-term trends that may be important to local farmers, landowners, and community members.

Through this hands-on field and laboratory experience, Braylon gained valuable skills in environmental monitoring, data analysis, and water quality assessment while contributing to efforts that help protect Muskingum County's natural resources.

Congratulations, Braylon, on a meaningful summer of scientific research and community impact!

Morgan Layne completed a summer internship with Miba Bearings as an Engineering Intern. Morgan is a senior majoring in General Engineering at Muskingum University.

During the internship, Morgan gained valuable hands-on experience creating part drawings using Autodesk Inventor, coordinating meetings with outside vendors, and learning the manufacturing process for half-shell bearings. The internship also provided exposure to various aspects of engineering design, production, and project management within a manufacturing environment.

One of Morgan’s favorite experiences was visiting the foundry and observing the metal-melting process, where a large electrical field is used to melt and shape metal for production. Through this opportunity, Morgan developed technical and professional skills while gaining a deeper understanding of modern manufacturing and engineering operations.

🐻 Summer Internship Spotlight: Ella McClelland 🐻

Ella, who is entering her senior year, spent three months as a Bear Educator Intern at the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota.

The center's mission is to replace myths and misconceptions about bears with scientific facts. During her internship, Ella led educational tours and presentations, helping visitors learn about bear biology and behavior through science-based programming.

In addition to science communication, she gained hands-on experience in bear husbandry, including diet preparation, enrichment activities, and habitat maintenance. For her internship project, Ella designed and created a new enrichment device that challenges bears to spin a wooden panel to access food, encouraging natural problem-solving behaviors.

Through this experience, Ella strengthened her science communication skills and gained valuable experience in wildlife education and animal care. Congratulations, Ella, on an incredible summer!
