Check out the latest episode of EJB Talks where RDL's inaugural director Dr. Nicholas Longo joins Dean Stuart Shapiro at the Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy to discuss his journey into “citizen politics” and the vision behind the Rutgers Democracy Lab.

Thank you to the nearly 100 students, faculty, and staff who joined us last Thursday for the RDL Democracy Summer Research Symposium, an event showcasing the inaugural cohort of Democracy Summer Research Fellows!

The event included lively poster presentation sessions by Fellows, an insightful panel on civically-engaged research with leading experts, and workshops for PhD students on navigating academia and forming mutually beneficial community partnerships. RDL is committed to connecting communities across Rutgers to explore new approaches to studying and improving American democracy.

Constitution Day 2026, Part One 🇺🇸📖

More than 160 members of the Rutgers and broader community joined us for an evening of conversation, connection and reflection on the Constitution and its enduring influence on American democracy.

The evening began with a reception and welcome remarks from Eagleton Institute of Politics Director Elizabeth C. Matto and Vince Stango, interim president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, our partner for the program.

From there, we gathered for a lively conversation with constitutional scholar Akhil Reed Amar, moderated by Eagleton faculty member and CNN Senior Legal Analyst Elie Honig, exploring equality, citizenship and constitutional rights from the nation’s founding to today.

The conversation continued with questions from students and members of the audience, followed by a book signing with Professor Amar and an opportunity for guests to connect and continue the discussion.

Last chance to RSVP!

Who decides where data centers are built? How do workplaces shape democratic life? What do education and public history teach us about citizenship? Where and how are governments adopting AI in their workflows?

This summer, we supported 25 doctoral research projects from across Rutgers focused on U.S. democracy. We're excited to share their findings at a symposium later this week.

Please join us for RDL's Democracy Summer Research Symposium on September 17 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Cook Student Center at Rutgers–New Brunswick. The symposium will feature poster presentations from fellows, a faculty panel on publicly engaged scholarship, professional workshops for doctoral students, and opportunities to connect with colleagues across Rutgers who are researching democracy.
