The
PGY2 residency in emergency medicine pharmacy will focus on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to RWJUH Emergency Department (ED) in New Brunswick, NJ. The resident's focus will be on the direct care of ED patients in treatment areas such as emergent care, urgent care, non-urgent care, pediatrics, and psychiatry. Additional focus in toxicology is possible through elective rotation with the RWJUH Toxicologist, NJPIES rotation as well as monthly toxicologist consultants’ conference at the New York City Poison Control Center. Other rotation electives including MICU, CCU, SICU, and others are available. An academic appointment with the school of pharmacy is provided and the resident is required to participate in toxicology related didactic lectures, and function as a co-preceptor for Rutgers University pharmacy students. The PGY2 residency in emergency medicine pharmacy is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to specialized practice which meets the needs of patients in the emergency department setting. Upon completion of training, graduates are equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team, are able to prioritize responsibilities and utilization of resources, and are able to make complex medication recommendations in this fast-paced environment. Training focuses on developing residents’ capability to deal with a wide range of diseases and disorders that occurs in patients in the emergency environment. Graduates of the program are empowered to treat and appropriately triage the most complex chronic and acute illnesses presented by emergency department patients, including those with multiple disease states and serious complications. They also acquire the experience necessary to exercise leadership for emergency medicine pharmacy practice in the health-care system. Longitudinal Pharmacy Practice Experiences
Residents will interact with Doctor of Pharmacy students from the EMSOP at Rutgers University
Residents will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills by providing in-service presentations and participating in a Teaching Certificate Program at the EMSOP at Rutgers University
A scholarly research project is required, and the results are to be presented at the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors
BLS and ACLS training is required
Weekend pharmacist staffing duties are required (3 weekends per 9 week period)
Conference Attendance
In order to instill in the Resident the attitude that it is a professional responsibility to maintain pharmacy competency through a planned program of self-education, the Resident is required to participate in continuing education programs through regular attendance at local professional meetings and seminars. These include, but not limited to the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, NJSHP meetings, the ASHP Eastern States Resident/Preceptor's Conference, NYC PCC Consultants’ Conference. Travel support is provided for Residents to attend these conferences. It is expected that these professional interactions and experiences will also motivate the Resident to become involved in activities of professional organizations and develop a personal philosophy of, and commitment to, their professional role and responsibilities. As a requirement for completion of the residency program, the Resident is expected to complete a major project. The Resident is encouraged to choose a topic that, in addition to being an area of interest to the Resident, will contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge. PGY2 Preceptors
