WELCOME CEREMONY! 💜 🎆

On Saturday, we held our very first Welcome Ceremony for Hero Schoolhouse families.

* Learners and their families "crossed the threshold" into an exciting new journey.

* We made our mark with painted handprints to honor these founding families.

* The learners participated in a scavenger hunt to explore their new studio.

* Then they led their families on a tour of the space. (Pictures of the studio coming next week!)

* We ended with gathering to learn more about our fellow travelers and enjoy a meal together ❤️

It's become too common for children to dread Sunday evenings...and Monday mornings might even be worse because your child doesn't look forward to school at all. But honestly, who wants to spend M-F in a setting that is stripping them of joy and curiosity? Unfortunately, the rigidity of a traditional model can often do just that.

That's why it's such a top goal at our school to ensure that school is a place of joy (without removing challenge). Here's a bit of a contradiction...challenge doesn't strip children of joy because overcoming small challenges and pushing yourself actually releases dopamine!

So it's entirely possible to have a joy-filled and academically rigorous school. Check out our website to learn how we do this!

You can only reach the goals that you set intentionally, and the goals we set at Hero Schoolhouse are completely different. We know that research on success shows that soft skills like confidence, mindset, grit, emotional intelligence, and more are linked to lifelong success. We understand that while academics are important, if you focus on the right foundational skills, not only will academic success follow, but so will lifelong career success.

In order to create confident and resilient leaders who can think for themselves and don’t give up easily, we will normalize failure and prioritize critical thinking through daily discussions that encourage students to push back and question and defend their opinions. We encourage individuality through built-in flexibility that allows students some freedom based on their own ways of learning.

We don’t have homework or typical tests, because every student is working on a self-paced curriculum that has built-in measures to ensure that the student is understanding the material at a high level of proficiency.

Think about your own childhood. Did it include a patch of woods, a neighborhood to roam, and time that nobody scheduled? That freedom was doing some of the most important developmental work of your life.

In recent years, we decided structured time and more academics were better. The research disagrees.

Our youngest students will get two full hours of unstructured outdoor play every day. It's a core part of the model, because we know that creativity, emotional regulation, and resilience are built through this type of play.

We believe that a person's chance of success is directly related to their tolerance of failure. Do you give up after the first failure? Or keep pushing through even after the fifth failed attempt? And as educators, we can't wait til our children are near adulthood to start practicing failing gracefully. We have to build that skill when they are young.

And that skill can only be built by normalizing failure and making sure we support our students when they fail and help them develop growth mindset and grit.

That can't happen if students never fail...which is why we want them to!

We're still in awe of yesterday - between the young entrepreneurs who poured so much into their booths, to the community showing up to support them in such a big way, we couldn't be happier with how the day went.
