The impact of trauma affects the individual, families and communities by disrupting healthy development, adversely affecting relationships and contributing to serious mental health issues. When communities continue to produce multi-generations of people with untreated trauma, we can see the results in higher levels of substance abuse, sexual and domestic violence, increased crime and family instab
ility. Addressing trauma in an informed way involves using a treatment framework that includes recognition, understanding and engagement. Too often, trauma survivors are re-traumatized by well-meaning, professional service providers. Understanding and incorporating intentional, trauma informed responses can help create a compassionate and supportive community response.
