Appalachia Uncovered is a project intended to explore all aspects of Appalachian life. I produce nature videos of the Appalachian Mountains, write articles about culture and history, and offer visitors information on hiking and music. This project is for those who are familiar with Appalachia and especially for those who are not.

I grew up in a coal camp outside of the town of Appalachia, Virgin

ia. My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all coal miners, but the industry came to screeching halt in the mid-1990s when I was in elementary school. Like many Appalachians before me, at the age of 20 I moved from my small town to Roanoke, Virginia. I dropped out of college shortly after I began, but decided to finish my degree in 2013 by enrolling at Virginia Western Community College. In 2014 I enrolled at Virginia Tech and the very first class I took was titled "Introduction to Appalachian Studies." I was so excited to take a class on the region that I grew up in. In 2017 I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Major in History and Minor in Appalachian Studies. I pursued Appalachian Studies with a passion, but prior to graduation I became disheartened by the idea that I might not ever be able to pursue a career in Appalachian Studies.

Thus Appalachia Uncovered was born. This is a passion-project, a place for me to share my ideas about Appalachia with the world. I was inspired by my heroes to create my own content, and not to wait on anyone to give me the permission to do so. I hope to educate people about Appalachia, break stereotypes, and offer enjoyable content that is meant to be shared.
