Allyship is inherently performative.⁣

I know I’m shaking the table, but some of y’all been dozing off, so here we go.⁣

Instead of asking me why allyship is inherently performative, ask yourself why you need to be seen as an ally. ⁣

Why do you need that title? ⁣

Why can’t you just do your work and go home?⁣

Allies aren’t friends. ⁣

They serve their own interests. And if your interests are subject to the whims of white supremacy, we’re all dead. ⁣

Additionally, the dangerous first step in the pursuit of allyship is appointing ourselves as such without consulting the group we’re supposed to be in alliance with.⁣

Did they give you a title? What do they think of your actions?⁣

If you’re confused about the general consensus of the collective, it tells me 2 things:⁣

1. You are not in relationship with these people.⁣

2. You haven’t studied enough.⁣

⚡️WHERE IS YOUR THEORY?⁣

⚡️WHO ARE YOUR TEACHERS?⁣

⚡️WHAT WOULD THEY SAY?⁣

⚡️WHAT DOES THE TEXT SAY?⁣

⚡️WHAT ARE THE HISTORICAL PRECEDENTS? ⁣

⚡️WHAT IS THE VISION?⁣

If you don’t know, go home. Start over.⁣

Activism > Allyship⁣

You don’t need a title. You just need to do your work.⁣

It’s about time to come together and learn how we can collectively show up for racial justice in Nashville. It starts internally first, so over the next few months we will be getting together to discuss our relationships with whiteness and how to disrupt racism in our everyday lives.

Community members will gather for a press conference outside the Metro Nashville Historic Courthouse Tuesday, May 16th, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. to share ongoing concerns about the increasingly anti-democratic actions by our state and local representatives.

On April 25th, Metro Council voted to approve the largest public stadium subsidy in the history of U.S. professional sports. Two recent polls found that over 50% of Nashville residents oppose the stadium deal, and only about 25% are in favor of the deal.

During a five hour public hearing, 70% of the roughly 140 commenters spoke in opposition to the deal. Despite this, Metro Council decided to back billionaires and deny democracy.
This stadium deal will come at the cost of mass gentrification, redevelopment, and displacement; increased policing and surveillance; and negative environmental effects that will disproportionately impact Black, Brown, Indigenous, low-income, and unhoused Nashvillians.

Tennessee lawmakers have voted to abolish our Community Oversight Board that we voted to instate.

The bill is now in the hands of Gov Bill Lee to sign. Email Bill Lee and tell him to VETO SB0591 / HB0764 and show up to the next meeting May 22!

Onto the next fight.

State preemption is just another way to say white supremacy. Tennesseeans are under the rule of men that operate just as the South always has, like plantation owners. Their individual wealth, health, and safety is their priority, everything else is weaponized to protect it. Every law centers on coercive control and we're no stranger to punitive acts.

Undermining a Metro department created by public outcry, petitioning and campaigning by THE PEOPLE OF NASHVILLE despite the will of The Mayor, the Metro Council, and MNPD is the most clear example of Rule By Force that the legislature will undertake.
The constant barrage of abuse is exhausting. Take care of yourselves and one another and Keep showing up.
