New Substack piece: That "ugh" feeling might be grief in disguise...

Why that 'ugh' feeling might actually be grief

When world events happen, it's natural to wonder if - and how - to share the news with our young children. In this video, I walk through the factors I weigh when deciding to share (or not) with my children. Every family will make different choices that work for them, but I hope my thought-process helps you reflect on what feels right for you.

Gentle reminder to us all that little ears, eyes and hearts may be listening.

Yesterday I spent my afternoon at the Women’s Conference—a day filled with gifted speakers, new perspectives, and inspiring stories.

I went because one day, I hope to share the message of from the stage: that talking with kids about loss isn’t impossible, it’s a learnable skill.

Here’s to big dreams, brave talks, and normalizing conversations no one ever taught us to have.

Year 3 as a Grief Guide at Alive Hospice's Camp Forget-Me-Not = joy, comfort, healing, and an epic launch off the Wet Willie slide.

Sunset at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, wonderful campers, amazing volunteers, and a friend and former-coworker...a magical 36 hours.

This camp is a gift to the community, and each year it reminds me--grief is the teacher, and joy is still in the lesson plans.

When a child brings up something sad or scary, pause before jumping in with answers.

It’s natural to want to explain right away—but sometimes our nerves take over, and we might overshare or give more details than they need.

Instead, try this gentle, grounding response:

“Tell me what you’ve heard.”

This simple question helps us understand where they’re coming from and what they actually know. From there, we can offer the right amount of information—in a way that feels supportive and age-appropriate.

Summer camp holds so many memories for me, my husband, and our daughters. Today, we’re holding the Camp Mystic community in our hearts.

If you’re navigating how to share this news with your children, here are 3 things that helped me:

1) Steady yourself first. Take a moment and a breath before starting the conversation.

2) Keep it age-appropriate. Share just enough without over-explaining.

3) Emphasize agency. Help them learn that even when something bad happens, we can take meaningful action.

I’ve included an example of how I talked with my 10-year old—hoping it offers a model or starting point for your own conversation.
