3 things I think every FTO needs to remember:

1️⃣ Know their personality, not just their skills.
You’re not just figuring out what they know… you’re figuring out how they learn, communicate, process feedback, and respond under pressure.

2️⃣ Let them sit in the discomfort.
Struggling isn’t always failing. Sometimes you have to resist the urge to jump in and give them enough space to work through it themselves. Patient safety comes first, but discomfort isn’t an emergency.

3️⃣ They don’t have to do it the way you do it.
“There’s a better way” and “that’s not my way” are two very different things. Safe, appropriate, effective care doesn’t have to look exactly like yours.

The goal of FTO-ing isn’t to create another version of you.

It’s to help someone become a competent, confident version of themselves. 🚑

Being right and getting it right are not the same thing.

I love evidence-based medicine. Challenge me. Send me the study. Tell me when I’m wrong. That’s how we get better.

But condescension is not competence. Public humiliation is not education. And making another provider look stupid doesn’t make you smarter.

Your character matters.

How you treat the new EMT matters. How you handle disagreement matters. How you speak about people when they aren’t in the room matters. And how you act when you’re the one who got it wrong matters.

Know your medicine. Read the studies. Challenge outdated practice. Push EMS forward.

But stay humble enough to remember that none of us know everything.

Because if your version of evidence-based medicine requires ego, cruelty, and treating other providers like they’re disposable…

I don’t think the evidence was ever really the point.

I think being right was. 🎤
