Our coordinator found the Tennessee State Treeβs flower at the Oak workshop yesterday (yes sheβs easily distracted)! You can find the tulip or yellow poplar flowers at the top of the tree or after theyβve fallen on the ground from wind or rain. These hi-viz beauties were named for their tulip-like form of flower and leaf outline. They hail from the magnolia family of trees with cat-face shaped leaves and beautiful pale gray bark when young and overlapping fissured bark when older. Tennessee is one of 3 states (KY and IN) with tulip poplar as their state tree. While a commonly-sighted tree, this tall, straight, fast-growing tree has uncommonly soft, pale yellow sapwood and greenish brown heartwood that makes it so distinctive and easy to use in woodwork!
