Herzog & de Meuron restores one of New York's most iconic examples of urban Brutalism, the Breuer Building, which will open to the public in late 2025 as Sotheby's new global headquarters, marking the latest chapter in the life of a structure that has constantly evolved to house some of the city's most significant art collections.
The renovation, undertaken in conjunction with local company Platt Byard Dovell White Architects (PBDW), takes a 'light-touch' approach, preserving Breuer's original materials and spatial ambitions while modernizing infrastructure to increase accessibility, curatorial flexibility, and visitor experience. The building's distinguishing elements, such as bush-hammered concrete walls, coffered ceilings, mahogany finishes, and bluestone floors, have not been altered.

As the firm's first project in Thailand, Heatherwick Studio unveils the design for Hatai, a mixed-use development in Bangkok. The plan combines two new hotels with a public plaza, canal restoration, and outdoor community events on the location of the former Narai Hotel in the city's Silom area.
Traditional Thai lanterns' material and symbolic elements are incorporated into the building. In order to diffuse light and soften the development's silhouette against the city's strong commercial skyline, vertical structures are designed as stacked volumes with textured and flexible surfaces. In contrast to the region's typical blank, repetitive façade, the composition offers a layered rhythm.
