Credit @amplifyafrica ... Tara Roberts shed light on a major gap in how history is taught: the transatlantic slave trade. She revealed that around 12,000 ships carried 12.5 million Africans to the Americas, yet few can name even one of those vessels, unlike the Mayflower or the Titanic. Even more devastating, she noted that 1.8 million Africans lost their lives during the Middle Passage, a tragedy that remains underacknowledged. Her reflection challenges how we remember history and whose stories we choose to tell. We are just a week away from heading to South Africa 🇿🇦 with Youth Diving With A Purpose on their Youth International Cultural Awareness Program (YICAP) where we'll meet NEWF for a diving and cultural experience of a lifetime. Last meeting we were taught some useful Zulu words along with students engaging in dialogue about each other's cultures.
