Remember when walking into Pizza Hut felt like stepping into another world.
The glow of those stained-glass lamps hanging low over the table made everything feel warmer, safer, and more special.
You’d slide into that red vinyl booth, the seats squeaking just a little, already knowing what you were going to order before you even picked up the menu.
A cold cola in a heavy plastic cup, a pan pizza sizzling in its skillet, and the smell of baked cheese drifting through the whole place—it was a full experience, not just dinner.
And while you waited, you’d hear the jukebox flip discs and settle into a new song like it was choosing it just for you.
Maybe you had a handful of quarters left over from conquering Galaga, or maybe you were just riding the high of beating your best score.
Somehow, every night in that little booth felt like a celebration.
Not because life was perfect, but because simple things carried more weight, more magic, more memory.
For a moment… we were kings.

This overdue classmate spotlight shines on one that we all know and are blessed to call friend. I am fairly sure that she has never met a stranger because she has a personality that will not quit. That also goes for her motivation in life. At our 40th reunion in September, she sparkled when she arrived dressed as one of our favorite 80’s icon and absolutely nailed the Prince look.
Cherie Brown Brewington is an Antioch native who began school at Una Elementary until the 4th grade, then finished at Tusculum Elementary. Her family made a brief move to Louisville, Kentucky where she went to 7th grade. Upon returning to the area, Cherie finished school at Apollo and then our beloved Antioch.
Cherie was very active during her high school years. She started playing the clarinet in the band at Apollo and was one of few selected musicians to participate in Antioch’s competition marching band as a freshman. Cherie participated in marching band through her years at Antioch and was in the top 3 chairs for clarinet. In addition to marching band, she assisted teachers and students in special needs classes and was the manager for the women’s tennis team. After school, you could find Cherie working part-time at JCPenney and DJ’s Fashions at Hickory Hollow Mall.
She considers the greatest accomplishments in her life–her children, Krystal and Shane. While raising her children as a single mom and working a full-time job, Cherie also attended Middle Tennessee State in the evenings for two years. This determination would lead to her 23 ½ year career in Commercial Insurance where she is a team lead and manages 19 direct reports.
Cherie and her husband, Brian have been together for almost 20 years, married for 10 of those next June. They reside in Murfreesboro and enjoy being grandparents to Sanai (16), Christopher (13), Sienna (10), and Shanna (5) who Cherie calls them the greatest LOVES of her life. Most of her free time is spent at cheer competitions, basketball games, track meets, girls flag football games or school performances and programs supporting her grands.
When Cherie is not working or attending her grandchildren’s activities, she can be found cheering on her Tennessee Titans. She proudly counts herself a true-blue Titans fan during the good times, the bad times and the ugly.
If that’s not enough to keep her busy, she spends her creative energy as a silk floral designer for Monarch Blossoms, her side hustle that she started a few years ago. Cherie’s Facebook & Instagram pages are . As she put it, “I love to create special arrangements that my customers can enjoy forever.”
Cherie plans to retire early when she turns 62 but don’t think for a minute that she will be ready for a rocking chair. She states that she “can’t wait to spend more time with my grandbabies & designing florals!”
Cherie, your enthusiasm has always been infectious, your work ethic inspiring, and your motivation encouraging. Thank you for sharing the details of your life after Antioch.

If you grew up in the 80s, this photo is basically your DNA.
A jean jacket with buttons that told the world who you were.
A Walkman that never left your side — even if it ate your favorite mixtape.
Polaroids that developed right in your hands, capturing blurry smiles that somehow felt perfect.
A Trapper Keeper that held everything — from math homework to secret notes folded into triangles.
Coca-Cola in an ice-cold can that tasted better because it came straight from the vending machine at the roller rink.
Atari joysticks that made you feel like a pro athlete — even when you were just trying to beat your own high score.
Cassette tapes labeled in Sharpie, each one a time capsule of emotions.
A Rubik’s Cube you swore you could solve… someday.
And those Nike Blazers — worn until the soles gave out.
This wasn’t just stuff.
It was the soundtrack of our growing up.
The gear that shaped our days.
The pieces of a world that moved slower, felt simpler, and somehow meant more.
Because the 1980s weren’t just a decade.
They were a vibe.
A feeling.
A starter pack for everything that still makes us smile today.
