In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re revisiting some of TEDxPearlStreet’s most riveting talks led by inspiring and gifted women. In this video - Jessica Buchanan, a former humanitarian aid worker living in Somalia, recounts her harrowing experience when she was kidnapped and held hostage for 93 days. In today’s challenging times, her message of constant change is ultimately an uplifting one.

It can be overwhelming, for sure- if you don’t know where to start! But we have laid out the entire book proposal process for you over here at PYC and simplify the process so that you can get your story out there, expanding your reach, building your audience and living your purpose!

Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we’re showing a little love for our gals! We’re so thankful for everyone in the PYC community telling their stories and helping other women tell their stories! Women supporting women. Period.

No. But really.

This is Jess here and I want to tell you something really important. 🚨 will keep us more stuck than our perceived lack of opportunity, not knowing where to start, or any of the hundreds of reasons I hear from women on the reg.

My advice 💯 of the time is to just get it out- the story, the pain, the lessons learned, the questions- sit your butt down every damn day and get something out- on paper- and then worry about the editing, the feedback, the publishing.

So often we go nowhere because we are afraid.
Afraid we won’t do it perfectly, we won’t get it right, and we’ll look like losers in the process.

Your assignment for the weekend: even if it’s one sentence, you say over and over to yourself in the mirror…get it out. Because that’s the first step to the rest of your right. 🙌✨

I'm often asked about the most surreal moments of my survival experience. And it's times like these- seeing my face on billboards and signs that say “Using Pain to Find Your Purpose.”

After the Boston Marathon 💣 my life was completely unrecognizable. I had NO idea how I was going to begin putting the pieces of my life back together, much less creating any sort of purpose from it. But early on I realized that in the midst of the chaos, I was SO INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL to just be alive. And it didn't matter that I didn't know what was going to happen, because I knew that still being here was all the purpose I needed.

Surviving gave me an appreciation for life like I never had before. And before I knew it, I had created a new life I absolutely love, not because everything was easy, but because for the first time I allowed myself to appreciate every part of the journey.

And when you do that, life will open up in ways you never couldve imagined otherwise. I'm living proof of that. 💗
