Gosh I’m grateful for my friends! … you know the kind where you pick right up where you left off … is one of those friends. We started new businesses at the same time in 2020 and cheered each other on! I’m so glad to see Forest and his beautiful family back in Nashville, healthy and happy! Be on the lookout for new things from this guy! Great having some sweet tea with ya friend. 💗

I’ve been reading the beautiful tributes to the great Don Schlitz. It’s wonderful to hear the consistent message of kindness, encouragement, and mentorship he gave to everyone. My humble contribution to the tributes are these:
1. Another complete iconic treasure of a songwriter, Rhonda Kye Fleming, shared this photo of one of the greatest publishing companies on music row after a BMI dinner - ALmo Irving. This is early 80s. There are faces I know and love, and icons I wish I’d known. Don is a stand out!!! Kye is one person over. Sweet Karen and Donnie Lowery are on the end (Nate’s parents). Of course the bosses - Lance Freed, Chuck Flood, and David Conrad - Chris Oglesby is popping up in the back … Mary Dell Scoby, … if you look closely you’ll see Emmy Lou barely picking over in the back. Garth Fundis, Kent Robbins are also pictured. My generation of song pluggers understood the magic that was Almo Irving and you can feel it in this photograph of which Don was a part.
2. I got to experience some amazing things at ASCAP and one was getting to know Don. I was nervous to meet with him for obvious reasons, but he was like most writers in that he had music to share and a career to keep strategizing about. It was exciting to find someone like Don open to new ideas. He liked some of my co-writer ideas and publishing company suggestions and was easy to work with. He and Stacey were lovely to be around. The only time I’ve attended the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in New York was when Don was inducted. I haven’t seen anyone share that photo and wanted to share that it was a brilliant night.
3. One of my fav teachings of Don’s was when he presented Dallas Davidson the award for ACM Writer of the year. He said about Dallas and his songs- “Dallas makes you feel like there’s a party going on and everyone’s invited.” Sitting in the audience at the Ryman I thought - wow! Yes he does! … and then Don added “… even you.” 🤯
The world will remember the songs, and we are lucky enough to remember the man. God bless Don and his wonderful legacy. ❤️

Figuring out who you are and how you wanna do life takes courage. … remember the “growing pains” when you were a kid? I think they’re still around as an adult. Celebrate those times, maybe a year ago… maybe even a month ago, where you felt some discomfort, recognized it, and grew from it. Maybe it’s just one little bit of self awareness that you gained, but it moved you toward your true north. Whether it’s a season or big moves or little nuanced ones, I hope you find the courage to expand.
