Customer choice starts with transparent pricing.

A new Concord Monitor opinion piece explains why accurate utility supply rates matter for New Hampshire customers and a competitive electricity market.

The article discusses how utility default service rates have not consistently reflected the actual cost of purchasing electricity, leading to under-collected supply costs that utilities are now seeking to recover. It also highlights why those costs should be recovered from the customers who incurred them—not shifted onto Community Power customers or other competitive supply customers.

When electricity prices reflect actual costs, customers can make informed decisions about their energy supply and communities can continue benefiting from local energy choice.

Help shave the peak this summer.

CPCNH’s PEAK SHAVE Program sends email alerts and optional text reminders when electricity demand is expected to be especially high and it may be helpful to reduce electricity use for a few hours.

Participation is free, flexible, and voluntary. You choose what works for you, whether that means adjusting your air conditioning, waiting to run the dishwasher or laundry, pausing EV charging, or limiting large appliances during the alert window.

Small actions can add up when many people participate at the same time, helping ease strain on the grid and support future rate stability.

Why do utility supply rates matter for Community Power customers?

Over the past two years, New Hampshire’s electric utilities have collectively under-collected nearly $50 million in power supply costs. These balances accumulated because utility default service rates have not always reflected the actual cost of buying electricity.

When rates do not reflect actual costs, customers may not have a clear basis for comparing utility default service, Community Power, and competitive supply options.

CPCNH is working with our Members to support a fair and transparent energy market, where costs are recovered from the customers who incurred them and customers can make informed choices.

Community Power is built through local leadership, and the Upper Valley continues to lead by example.

CPCNH was glad to participate in the 2026 Upper Valley Energy Committee Roundtable, where energy committees, municipal leaders, and community volunteers gathered to share ideas, compare challenges, and strengthen regional collaboration.

CPCNH was represented by Andrew Hatch, Community Energy Advisor, alongside members and energy committees from Lyme, Canaan, Hanover, Lebanon, Enfield, Plainfield, Grantham, Cornish, New London, Springfield, and more.

These conversations help turn local energy goals into practical action: expanding community knowledge, supporting municipal energy work, and advancing local choice across New Hampshire.
