So you started playing pickleball and you want something that helps you perform better on the court and helps prevent injury? Or maybe youâre a tennis player curious if your old pickleball kicks can handle the court? The question burns: Are pickleball and tennis shoes really the same? Itâs a dilemma that plagues beginners and seasoned players alike, with misinformation swirling about âmultipurposeâ athletic shoes.
The truth is, while pickleball and tennis shoes share similarities, theyâre designed for distinct movements, surfaces, and demands. Choosing the wrong shoe could mean slipping, discomfort, or even injury. This article dives deep into the differences, similarities, and key considerations to help you pick the perfect shoe for your game. By the end, youâll know exactly what to look forâwhether youâre smashing a serve or dinking at the net.
Pickleball and tennis are both racquet sports played on similar-looking courts, so itâs no surprise players assume their shoes are interchangeable. Both sports involve lateral movements, quick starts, and stops, which makes the overlap in shoe design tempting to ignore. But hereâs the kicker: pickleball and tennis have unique movement patterns and court surfaces that demand specific footwear features.

Etiquette is so important! Let's keep these rules in mind...and always play nice! đ
𫵠The Golden Rule: Donât Be a Jerk
First off, the most basic suggestion is âbe a nice
humanâ or to put it more bluntly âdonât be a jerk.â This is especially true when playing recreational or social pickleball.
Once when browsing a pickleball forum, somebody was complaining that they were playing with a new player and a more experienced player on the other side kept nailing that new player with the ball, including a head shot.
I was surprised to see people defending that action. Nope, sorry, thatâs not an acceptable way to initiate new players. They are trying to learn a fun new sport, not join the navy seals.
(On a side note, my son does seem to take pride in nailing me with body shots but thatâs a father-son thing and he knows after years of playing baseball and doing martial arts Iâve been hit with a lot harder things. But I digress.)

Good advice!
đ The Mental Slap You Actually Need
Letâs get real: Youâve read the blog posts. You know youâre âsupposedâ to stay positive. Youâve tried the breathing exercises. Youâve attempted the between-point routines.
And when youâre getting crushed, none of it works, does it?
Thatâs because most mental game advice is designed for practice courts and comfortable situations. Itâs performance tips for when youâre already performing well. But what about when youâre in the fire? What about when your brain is actively convincing you that youâve already lost?
Sports psychologist Dr. Jim Afremow talks about âchampionship momentsââbut hereâs what he doesnât emphasize enough: those moments require you to become someone youâre not naturally being in that instant. You have to forcefully shift your identity from âplayer whoâs losingâ to âplayer whoâs about to make a comebackâ with zero evidence to support it.
Thatâs not a gentle adjustment. Thatâs a mental slap.
