Powerful truths that many dyslexic children wish adults understood about their experiences:

1. “I’m not lazy—I’m working twice as hard.”
• Dyslexic kids often put in enormous effort to decode words and spell correctly.
• What looks like carelessness is usually fatigue from the extra mental energy required.
• Recognizing their persistence helps build empathy and encouragement.

2. “I’m smart, even if reading is hard.”
• Dyslexia affects how the brain processes language, not intelligence.
• Many dyslexic children excel in creativity, problem-solving, and big-picture thinking.
• They want adults to see their strengths, not just their struggles.

3. “Confidence matters as much as skills.”
• Struggles with reading and spelling can chip away at self-esteem.
• Kids wish adults would celebrate progress, not just perfection.
• A supportive environment helps them feel capable and resilient.

We can raise their confidence together.

Helping with Homework: 3 Simple Supports

1. Break It Down
Homework can feel overwhelming when a child sees a whole page of problems or a long reading passage.
• How to help: Divide assignments into smaller sections—maybe two math problems at a time or one short paragraph to read.
• Use short work periods: Set a timer for 10–15 minutes, then give a quick break for stretching or a snack.
• Why it works: Smaller steps reduce stress and help kids feel successful, which builds confidence and keeps motivation up.

2. Guide, Don’t Give
Children learn best when they’re supported to find answers themselves, rather than being told the solution.
• How to help: Ask guiding questions like, “What sound do you hear at the beginning of that word?” or “Does this word look like another one you know?”
• Encourage strategies: Remind them to tap out sounds, look for word patterns, or use spelling rules they’ve practiced.
• Why it works: Gentle prompting builds independence and problem-solving skills, while still giving them the safety net of your support.

3. Use Tools & Play
Homework doesn’t have to be dry—adding multisensory tools makes practice more engaging and memorable.
• How to help: Create a personal word wall, use flashcards, or keep a small dictionary nearby.
• Make it playful: Try writing words in sand, tracing letters with fingers, or building words with magnetic letters.
• Why it works: Multisensory activities tap into sight, sound, and touch, which strengthens memory and makes learning feel fun instead of frustrating.

Together, these supports turn homework into a more positive, manageable experience. They help children feel capable, reduce stress, and build the skills they need to grow as readers and spellers.

One in three children with ADHD also face challenges with dyslexia—something many families don’t realize.

Why It Matters:
• Kids with both conditions face a double challenge—they’re working hard to focus and to decode words.
• Without the right support, they may feel frustrated or lose confidence.
• With the right help, though, they can learn strategies to manage both and thrive.

What Helps:
• Clear routines: Predictable homework times, movement breaks, and step-by-step instructions.
• Specialized reading support: Structured literacy programs designed for dyslexia.
• Team approach: Parents, teachers, and tutors working together to support both attention and reading needs.

Together we can navigate the next steps.
